Top 10 Most Vegan Friendly Cities in Europe You Should Visit
I’ve spent my entire life living in Europe, and since making the switch to veganism in 2007, I’ve visited about 20 countries in Europe.
So, I’m excited to share my experiences with you and give you a list of the top 10 most vegan friendly cities in Europe. Rest assured, I won’t solely depend on my personal impression.
I’ll also present you with concrete facts, namely the number of vegan restaurants in each city as of January 2024.
Top 10 Most Vegan Friendly Cities in Europe
1. Barcelona
Number of vegan restaurants in Barcelona: 62 (not the most, but it’s my personal favorite)
You might expect to find London or Berlin on the top spot but my favorite vegan city in Europe is Barcelona. There are so many different vegan restaurants in Barcelona near the city’s main attractions.
According to Happy Cow, there are 62 all-vegan restaurants in Barcelona and 60 more vegetarian restaurants.
In Barcelona, you can find everything from Spanish tapas to vegan junk food. You can even get some amazing vegan sushi in Barcelona. I think I had the best vegan sushi I ever had in Europe in Barcelona.
But if you’re only in Barcelona for 3 days or less, you should definitely try some vegan tapas. Multiple vegan restaurants are serving the traditional Spanish small dishes. It’s the perfect food to share with friends.
Some of the best places I’ve found to try tapas in Barcelona are Bubita Sangria Bar, Vegan Tulsi, and La Perra Verde.

2. London
Number of vegan restaurants in London: 163
There are 163 vegan restaurants in London according to Happy Cow! That’s amazing.
The only reason London didn’t make the top spot on this best vegan cities Europe list is that London is so big and the selection of vegan restaurants close to the main tourist attractions is more limited.
Don’t get me wrong, the vegan restaurants in London SOHO for example are amazing, you can get delicious burgers and tacos and more. But I’ve been to London many times and I tend to stay in the same areas and it feels like I’ve already tried all the restaurants there multiple times.
This is my personal impression, especially since every time I’m in London I go to the same areas, because I love to do Harry Potter things in London, go to see a musical or stroll next to the themes. So, yes, maybe I should just spread my circle a bit wider and explore different areas of the city.
Nevertheless, London is definitely one of the best vegan cities Europe has to offer as well as the best city to visit in the UK.
3. Berlin
Number of vegan restaurants in Berlin: 122
Berlin has an impressive number of 122 vegan restaurants. Germany’s capital has a thriving vegan food scene and the city is known as the vegan capital of Europe.
I’ll be honest with you, it’s been over 10 years that I was in Berlin. So, I can’t remember any specific restaurants, I just remember even back then that I really enjoyed the vegan scene.
One of my favorite things about Berlin is that there are so many vegan options in normal supermarkets and health food stores. But of course, you can also find all vegan shops.
And of course, there are plenty of vegan fast food options in Berlin, too. From burgers and kebabs to ice cream and sweets, you can find it all in this bustling city.
4. Amsterdam
Number of vegan restaurants in Berlin: 68
Amsterdam is another one of the best vegan cities in Europe. The city is known for its beautiful canals and picturesque streets, but it’s also a great destination for vegans with 68 fully vegan restaurants.
Amsterdam offers a diverse range of cuisines from around the world, including sushi, burgers, and curries.
One of the must-try restaurants in Amsterdam is the vegan fast food chain Vegan Junk Food Bar. They offer classic fast food dishes like burgers, fries, and milkshakes but all completely plant-based.
The company started in Amsterdam, but nowadays you can find outlets in Spain and Germany.
5. Paris
Number of vegan restaurants in Paris: 92
Paris is not just one of the most important cities in Europe to visit it’s also one of the most vegan-friendly ones. The only reason Paris is not ranking higher on this list is that France as a whole is not very vegan-friendly at all.
But when you stick to the capital city you’re all set for an unbelievably delicious holiday. In Paris, you can find everything from international cuisine to traditional French cuisine made vegan. Not to forget the amazing vegan croissants and baguettes you can try in Paris.
6. Hamburg
Number of vegan restaurants in Hamburg: 55
Hamburg might not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of vegan-friendly destinations, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list. With 55 vegan restaurants, Hamburg offers a variety of options for plant-based eaters.
After Berlin, Hamburg is the second German city on the list. When traveling as a vegan in Europe, Germany is a great addition to your travel guide. While only two cities made it to the top 10 list, finding vegan options in other German cities is also very easy.
7. Warsaw
Number of vegan restaurants in Warsaw: 53
Poland may not be known as a vegan-friendly country, but its capital city Warsaw is making strides in the plant-based food scene. With 53 vegan restaurants, it’s definitely worth a visit for any vegan traveler.
From traditional Polish dishes made vegan to international cuisines like Mexican and Italian, there are plenty of options to choose from in Warsaw.
Warsaw is one of the most affordable vegan friendly European cities, making it the perfect destination for budget travellers looking to indulge in delicious vegan food in Europe.
8. Madrid
Number of vegan restaurants in Madrid: 49
Next on our list is the Spanish capital, Madrid. With 49 vegan restaurants, there are plenty of options for plant-based eaters in this vibrant city.
Madrid offers a mix of traditional Spanish dishes made vegan as well as international cuisines.
One of my favorite vegan breakfast places in Madrid is Frutas Prohibidas. Their vegan eggs-benedict and smoothie bowl are absolutely amazing. And I didn’t even get the chance to try their delicious-looking pancakes.
9. Vienna
Number of vegan restaurants in Vienna: 48
Vienna, the capital of Austria, is another city that may not be known for its vegan food scene but is quickly making strides in becoming a vegan-friendly destination. With 48 vegan restaurants, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Among the vegan restaurants in Vienna, you can find all different kinds of cuisines. One cuisine you should definitely try while in Vienna is the traditional Austrian cuisine. Traditional dishes are Wiener Schnitzel, Apfelstrudel, Sachertorte, and many others.
My favorite restaurant for all vegan Austrian cuisine is Velani. They serve only traditional dishes and they prepare them perfectly.
10. Lisbon
Number of vegan restaurants in Lisbon: 42 vegan
Lisbon is not only a beautiful city with stunning architecture, but it’s also one of the most vegan-friendly beach towns Europe has to offer.
One of the must-try dishes in Lisbon is the famous “pastel de nata” which has been plant-based by several vegan bakeries in the city.
And for those looking for something more filling, there are plenty of vegan restaurants offering classic Portuguese dishes like “francesinha”. With 42 vegan restaurants, Lisbon has something to offer for every type of plant-based traveler.
Final Thoughts: Vegan Travel Europe
Europe is truly a paradise for vegan travelers with its diverse range of cuisines and the increasing number of vegan-friendly establishments.
If I were to pick my personal favorite, I would say Barcelona is the best city for vegans in Europe. I am particularly fond of how the city’s vegan restaurants are conveniently located near the main attractions, making it easy for sightseeing and indulging in delightful Spanish cuisine.
However, purely from the perspective of the number of vegan restaurants, London takes the win. With its 163 vegan restaurants, it’s the best city for vegans and might even be leading the race to become the vegan capital of the world.
So, whether it be savoring a vegan Paella in Barcelona or enjoying a plant-based roast in London, the options for vegan food in Europe are truly endless.
