10 Best Fully Vegan Restaurants in Budapest

Budapest, a vibrant city known for its rich culture and architectural beauty, is also a haven for vegan foodies. The capital of Hungary offers numerous all-vegan restaurants, which cater to all taste buds.

I’ve been to Budapest multiple times and I had the pleasure of trying out a lot of the best vegan restaurants in Budapest. My favorite part about the vegan scene in Budapest is that there are so many restaurants serving vegan versions of traditional Hungarian dishes.

Budapest is also a great city if you want to indulge in a LOT of vegan food without going bankrupt. The restaurant prices are still lower than other popular European capitals, even though the prices have increased over the past few years.

Vegan Restaurants in Budapest with Hungarian Cuisine

Savoring dishes like vegan goulash, or plant-based stuffed cabbage is a culinary journey and an absolute must-do while visiting Budapest. And you can do it in fully vegan restaurants!

1. Kozmosz Vegan Restaurant

A gyros plate and a plate with goulash on a table, in one of the best vegan restaurants in Budapest
My favorite vegan restaurant Budapest has to offer for Hungarian cuisine

Kozmosz Vegan Restaurant is probably my favorite vegan restaurant in Budapest with Hungarian cuisine. It’s a little bit tucked away on a side street to the popular Andrássy Avenue. The restaurant is located in the cellar of the building so it might seem a bit dark if you visit during day time.

The food in Kozmosz is so amazing though, it’s worth sitting in a cellar for it. We tried different dishes and everything was delicious, especially the vegan gyros plate.

Don’t miss out on a dessert, they have a very tasty version of the traditional Creamschnitta, a pastry with a LOT of cream. It’s quite tricky to find a good vegan version of it, buy the one at Kozmosz is so good.

Just all that delicious vegan Hungarian food you can try at Kozmosz makes Budapest worth visiting.

2. Napfényes Restaurant and Confectionery

A plate which is very foll with vegan food in Budapest
The sharing plate for 2 is a lot

Napfényes Restaurant is another great place for traditional Hungarian food, although they also serve pizza, pad thai, and some healthy whole-food dishes. They also have a daily changing lunch menu.

The restaurant has a bit of a fancy atmosphere, with a waiter or waitress showing you to your table which is not very common in Hungary. So, if you’re looking for a more sophisticated experience I recommend coming here instead of the overrated New York Café.

We couldn’t decide on what to get, so we got the sharing plate for two which had a selection of different dishes, especially different kinds of mock meat.

I love trying different things but altogether it was a bit too much fried stuff for me and too little green stuff. My boyfriend loved the plate.

Don’t skip the amazing desserts

We went back to Napfényes to try their daily menu and some delicious-looking cakes from the display. The daily menu was more my cup of tea, it was very delicious and the cakes are as tasty as they look.

Vegan Restaurants in Budapest with International Cuisine

The following restaurants have their culinary focus on international cuisine, however many restaurants still have Hungarian dishes on their menu.

3. Vegan Garden

A vibrant meal with a bowl of gnocchi in tomato sauce garnished with parsley, a wood-fired vegetable pizza, and a tall glass of iced tea with mint, served on a dark wooden table.
The vegan cheese on top of the pizza was so deliciously melty

Vegan Garden has a very sophisticated atmosphere and it feels a bit more on the fancy side even though it’s located inside a small mall. Since it’s inside some kind of mall, even the outdoor sitting area is inside a building. But it doesn’t have much mall vibe to it at all.

I really like their lemonades, they are very tasty, and decorated with fresh fruit and herbs. If you want to save some money, you can ask for Hungarian tap water instead.

On their menu, they have everything from pasta, pizza, and risotto to bowls and burgers, and they even have the traditional Hungarian Paprikash.

We had gnocchi and pizza, and we were very happy with our choice. The cheese on the pizza was really good, it melted perfectly. The crust was thin and crispy on the bottom. Everything I want from a pizza. And the gnocchi were soaked in a delicious tomatoey sauce.

4. Yes it is vegan

A colorful dish of layered vegan lasagna topped with melted cheese and fresh green leaves in a terracotta bowl, with a side of creamy pasta and a coleslaw salad in teal bowls, on a table with a tropical leaf-patterned tablecloth.
I was in the mood for lasagne at Yes it is Vegan

There are already two locations of Yes it is Vegan in Budapest. We only went to the second location since it was closer to our apartment. It was actually the first vegan restaurant in Budapest we visited, after a horrible bus journey from Belgrade to Budapest.

Even though Yes It Is Vegan advertises veganized versions of Hungarian dishes, I rank them under international cuisine since international cuisine seems to be predominant in their menu.

It’s one of the best vegan restaurants Budapest has to offer for a place where you can get main meals as well as lighter snacks. They don’t just serve main dishes like Paprikash, lasagne, or curry, but also snacks like scrambled tofu, sandwiches, and smoothie bowls.

A light snack is a perfect food when you want to get a Thai massage in Budapest later.

5. Édeni Vegán

A well-composed plate of various vegan foods featuring a dark mushroom topping over noodles, a vibrant mix of fresh salad greens, and a side of savory soup, all displayed on a floral tablecloth with intricate patterns.
It’s not the prettiest plate but I wanted to try everything from the buffet

Édeni Vegán was one of the only vegan restaurants in Budapest we visited on the Buda side of town.

It’s close to the perfect viewpoint of the Hungarian Parliament House from across the Danube River. Checking out this scenic spot is one of the best things to do in Budapest for free.

In Édeni Vegán you can choose from a set plate and a plate from the buffet. I couldn’t decide on what to get, so I got a plate with a little bit of everything from the buffet. My favorite item was the seitan on top, it was so well marinated and prepared.

It’s not really what’s typically understood as fast food but because of the buffet style, you get your food very fast. So, the best place to grab some food before exploring the Buda Castle district.

6. Tahina Bite Vegan Food

An assortment of vegan dishes including falafel wraps, fried cauliflower with sauce, stuffed grape leaves, and colorful pickled vegetables, flanked by two bottles of smoothies, presented on a white table with blue accents.
Great vegan food for a midday snack

Tahina Bite is an all-vegan falafel shop next to the great synagogue, a hidden gem in Budapest.

It’s the perfect vegan place in Budapest for a quick snack while sightseeing. They have bowls, wraps, and other small bites.

We tried different small bites and two of their pre-made smoothies, everything was very tasty except the cauliflower wings, which were not quite my cup of tea.

7. EPOCH Vegan Burger

Two vegan burgers with crispy patties and fresh lettuce on toasted buns, paired with a side of golden, thick-cut fries, presented on a teal blue tray atop a wooden table, evoking a casual, appetizing setting.
Great if you’re in the mood for fast food

EPOCH Vegan Burger is exactly what you would expect when you think of a burger fast food place. They have typical fast-food restaurant vibes, which is not a bad thing at all. I love them, particularly for their delicious burgers and sides.

It’s located near the central market of Budapest, which is great for strolling through but they don’t have that many vegan food options.

EPOCH Vegan Burger is the perfect place if you’re in the mood for a fast-food burger.

Best Vegan Pub in Budapest

8. Szabad Bisztró

A plate showcasing a large, savory fried patty with chopped parsley on top, next to a fresh Greek salad with feta cheese and olives, served on a wooden table.
There’s even an all vegan pub in vegan friendly Budapest

Szabad Bisztró is a vegan pub chain in Budapest with two locations. The menu features typical pub food like burgers and dirty fries, as well as pasta and bean goulash, amongst other things.

Moreover, they provide a wide range of beverages, including soft drinks, hot drinks, and an extensive selection of beers, wines, and spirits.

The atmosphere is very laid back and perfect for a night out with friends.

Overall, Szabad Bisztró is the go-to spot for delicious vegan pub food in Budapest. It’s especially great for an evening meal and drinks after relaxing in one of the Budapest thermal baths.

Best Vegan Cafés in Budapest

9. Plantmilkyway

A frothy cup of matcha latte next to a slice of strawberry cheesecake on a pale green ceramic plate, set on a wooden slatted table.
Vegan bakery Budapest: Great place for a slice of cake and a match latte

Plantmilkyway is a vegan pastry and coffee shop located next to the Central Market in Budapest. Its prime location allows you to browse through the largest indoor market in Budapest for souvenirs, followed by a visit to a vegan café for some delightful coffee and cake.

They have the cakes on display which vary every day I believe. For your coffee, you can choose between different kinds of plant-based milk.

I had a lovely cheesecake with a strawberry layer on top and a matcha latte. It was so nice to sit outside under a tree to enjoy a little break after exploring the lively market.

The inside sitting area is very limited, like two small bar tables with chairs, so it might be difficult to get a table in winter.

10. Napfényes Cukrászda

A generous slice of layered vanilla cream cake with a delicate dusting of powdered sugar on a white plate in the foreground, accompanied by a smaller piece of chocolate glazed cake in the background, set on a wooden table in a cozy café setting.
It’s one of the places where you can also have vegan breakfast in Budapest

Napfényes Cukrászda is a small bakery that sells sandwiches and quiches as well as a wide selection of pastries and cakes. They have a small indoor sitting area but most people just get their baked goods to go.

There’s also a shelf with some vegan groceries, so it’s a great small vegan shop in Budapest to buy some vegan treats or to get some bread.

Napfényes Cukrászda is on the way to Margaret Island, so it’s the perfect place to buy a pastry, walk to the island, and have a little picnic in the park.
