Margaret Island is an island in the Danube River in Hungary’s capital, Budapest. It’s the perfect place to spend a summer day in Budapest, you can go for a swim, have a drink and stroll through the beautiful park.

When I visited Margaret Island I simply walked there but since you’re going to do a lot of walking on the island anyway you can also get public transport to the island.

Getting to Margaret Island Budapest is very easy since the island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Margaret Bridge or Margit hĆ­d in Hungarian spans the Danube River and connects Margaret Island to the Pest and Buda side of Budapest.

Getting to Margaret Island by public transport

You can get to Margaret Island by bus or by tram. A lot of busses, trams and even a metro go to Margit hĆ­d, budai hĆ­dfő H which is the stop just off the bridge on the Buda side of Budapest.

The trams number 4 and 6 go over the bridge. The stop on the bridge is called Margitsziget / Margit hĆ­d and from there, it’s a very short walk to the island.

The bus number 26 goes all around the island. You can have a look at the stops and the timetable on the official Budapest Public Transport webpage under Bus 26.

Getting to Margaret Island on foot

The simple answer to the question, “Can you walk onto Margaret Island Budapest?” is yes, you can!

There’s a pedestrian walkway on both sides of Margaret Bridge and a pedestrian traffic light in the middle of the bridge near the entrance to the island.

I walked to Margaret Island and I had no problem at all finding the way, but in the evening my feet hurt from all the walking so I treated myself to a relaxing massage at one of the Thai massage parlours in Budapest.

It is not possible to get to Margaret Island by car unless you have a special permit.

Exploring Margaret Island on foot is one the best things to do in Budapest for free. But Margaret Island is quite big, it took me about 30 minutes of walking from one end to the other. Walking a loop around the island takes about 1 hour and 12 minutes.

So, you might want to consider other options besides walking everywhere, although strolling around Margaret Island is a great way to explore the island.

There are public buses running on Budapest Margaret Island and you can buy the tickets inside the bus. I ended up taking the bus back after having walked from one side to the other.

Another option is to hire a bike or even a bike wagon to get around the island. There are rental stations at the South entrance to the Island. Some companies have a renting desk while others only have an online rental service.

Bikes are a very popular way to get around Margaret Island since you can get everywhere you want and it isn’t as exhausting as walking. Riding a bike on Margaret Island is one of the fun and unique things to do in Budapest.

Where to stay on Margaret Island

In case you arrive at Margaret Island and don’t want to leave on the same day, there are two accommodation options on the island.

The 4-star thermal spa hotel Ensana Thermal Margaret Island offers a big spa area with indoor and outdoor pools with optional spa treatments and a fitness studio. There are two bars and a restaurant on site and each room features a balcony.

In case you decide to stay in the city centre of Budapest, you can get your spa treatment in one of the thermal baths in Budapest.

Island Hostel Budapest

The second accommodation on Margaret Island is the Island Hostel Budapest. There are 4, 8 and 10-bed dormitories as well as double private rooms in the hostel. The best part about the hostel is the big terrace which is great for having a drink in the evening.

Whether you’re getting to Margaret Island by public transport or on foot, it’s worth the journey if you spend a few days in Budapest.

This green lung of the city is the perfect place to go for a relaxing stroll through the Japanese Garden, go for a swim or for a drink. And afterwards, you’re refreshed to keep exploring Budapest.

I really enjoyed my time on Margaret Island, I just recommend taking enough time for it so you don’t have to rush through it.
