Looking for the best Budapest Instagram spots but not sure where to go for the perfect shot?

Budapest is one of the most photogenic cities in Europe, but once you’re there, it’s not always obvious where to stand, when to go, or how to avoid the crowds.

After exploring the city myself, I quickly realized that some spots are far more Instagram-worthy than others (and some are honestly a bit overrated).

In this guide, I’ll show you the best Budapest photo spots, from iconic landmarks to hidden gems, along with simple tips to help you get the most out of each location.

1. Fisherman’s Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the most photogenic and impressive spots in Budapest, with its arches and terraces offering beautiful views over the Danube and Parliament.

👉 For the best photo, come early in the morning and use one of the archways to frame your shot.

I quickly noticed how crowded it gets later in the day, which makes a big difference for photos. Having someone to take your picture also helps here (something I didn’t have), but even without that, you can still capture great shots of the architecture and views.

2. Matthias Church

Right next to Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church is one of the most eye-catching buildings in the area with its colourful tiled roof and detailed façade.

👉 For the best photo, shoot from Fisherman’s Bastion for a slightly elevated angle.

You can take great photos from the outside for free, but if you go inside (paid), you’ll find a completely different setting with intricate details and patterns.

I ended up taking my photos from the Bastion wall, which gave a nice balance between the views and the church itself.

3. Buda Castle

In my opinion, the Buda Castle itself isn’t the most impressive part, the real magic is in the surrounding grounds.

👉 For the best photos, explore the terraces and viewpoints around the castle rather than focusing on the building itself.

From here, you get sweeping views over the city, and if you turn the other way, the castle gates create a much more interesting foreground. Those were easily my favourite spot, they have a lot more character than the main building.

4. Castle Hill Funicular

The best photos of the Castle Hill Funicular aren’t from inside, they’re from a distance.

👉 Head to one of the nearby bridges to capture the funicular as it moves up and down the hill.

From there, you can frame it against Castle Hill or turn the other way for views towards the Pest side. Timing your shot as the car passes adds a nice sense of movement to your photo.

5. Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building is one of the most iconic landmarks in Budapest, and one of the best places for photos.

From nearby, you can appreciate the details, but going to the opposite side of the river it lets you fit the entire building into one frame. The river in the foreground also adds a much nicer composition.

6. St. Stephens Basilica

St. Stephen’s Basilica is one of the most impressive buildings in Budapest and a great spot, both inside and out.

You can take photos of the exterior for free, but going inside (paid) gives you access to more detailed interiors and the rooftop.

👉 For something more unique, head up to the rooftop viewpoint, you’ll get panoramic views over the city and access to the spiral staircase, which makes a great photo backdrop.

One thing to keep in mind: the ticket office is in a separate building next to the church, and there’s often a queue, so it’s worth coming early if you want to avoid waiting.

7. Liberty Bridge

While Chain Bridge is the most famous, Liberty Bridge was actually my favourite.

With its distinctive green colour and art nouveau design, it stands out immediately, and in my opinion, it’s the most beautiful bridge in Budapest.

It’s also a popular hangout spot, especially in the evenings, when people sit on the bridge and enjoy the views, which can add a nice local vibe to your photos.

Just be careful when taking photos, as there is traffic, and make sure you don’t block the road or disturb cars.

8. Széchenyi Baths

Széchenyi Baths are the most famous thermal baths in Budapest, and one of the most photogenic, thanks to their bright yellow buildings and outdoor pools.

👉 For the best photos, head to the main outdoor pool and try to shoot early in the morning before it gets too crowded.

That said, it wasn’t my favourite bath in Budapest. It gets very busy, which can take away from the experience and make photos a bit harder to capture.

Still, if you’re looking for that classic Budapest spa shot, this is the place to get it, just be prepared to work around the crowds.

9. Gellért Thermal Baths

If you prefer a quieter alternative to Széchenyi, Gellért Thermal Baths are a great option.

👉 For photos, head inside, the Art Nouveau hall with its mosaics and stained glass is one of the most beautiful indoor spots in Budapest.

It feels much more relaxed, which also makes it easier to take photos without large crowds in the background.

Even if you don’t plan to swim, the entrance hall alone is worth seeing for its architecture. They also have a spa shop, which is great for picking up a souvenir from Budapest.

10. Vajdahunyad Castle

Vajdahunyad Castle is one of the most unique spots in Budapest, with a mix of architectural styles that makes it feel almost like a fairytale setting.

👉 For the best photos, head to the lake and capture the castle with its reflection, especially in autumn when the colours are at their best.

It’s located in City Park, so it’s easy to combine with a walk through the area.

Make sure to explore the courtyards and smaller corners too, they often have quieter spots and more interesting angles than the main entrance.

11. New York Café

New York Café is often called the most beautiful café in the world, and with its golden interiors and grand chandeliers, it definitely lives up to the hype visually.

👉 For photos, go early to avoid the long queues and crowded seating areas.

That said, I personally found it a bit overrated. The prices are high, and you’ll often have to wait quite a while for a table. Read my full review of the New York Café here.

Still, if you’re after that iconic, luxurious café shot, it’s hard to beat, just be prepared for the crowds and cost.

12. Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar

Szimpla Kert is the most famous ruin bar in Budapest and one of the most unique places to take photos.

👉 For the best photos, visit during the day when it’s quieter and easier to capture the details without crowds.

Inside, almost every corner is covered in quirky art, graffiti, and eclectic décor, which makes it perfect for more creative shots.

At night, it gets very busy, so while the atmosphere is great, it’s much harder to take photos.

13. Margaret Island

Margaret Island is a great place to escape the busy city and find more relaxed photo spots.

👉 For the best photos, head to the musical fountain or the Japanese garden for more interesting and scenic backdrops.

It’s easy to reach on foot or by public transport, and once you’re there, you’ll find plenty of quieter areas compared to the main tourist sights.

If you’re looking for something more natural and less crowded, this is one of the best places to take photos in Budapest.

Unique Things to Do in Budapest (That Are Also Great for Photos)

While the classic landmarks are worth visiting, some of the most memorable (and unique) experiences in Budapest go beyond the typical sightseeing spots, and often make for even more interesting photos.

From exploring ruin bars during the day to relaxing in thermal baths or discovering hidden corners in places like Margaret Island, these moments often feel more authentic and less crowded than the main attractions.
