Epic Day Trip from Barcelona to Sitges by Train
Sitges is a charming seaside town just a short train ride away from Barcelona and offers stunning beaches, colorful architecture, and a vibrant cultural scene.
A day trip from Barcelona to Sitges by train is one of the best day trips you can do, whether you want to relax on the beach or explore the history of the beautiful coastal town.
This day trip guide contains the itinerary I wish I would have done. So, it’s not quite the itinerary I did myself but the one I recommend you to do after the experience I made.
How to Get from Barcelona to Sitges by Train
Trains from Barcelona to Sitges are very frequent and inexpensive. You can get a return ticket for under €10 and the trains depart from different train stations in Barcelona. This easy accessibility makes Sitges one of the most popular day trips from Barcelona.
The trains in Barcelona depart from the following train stations: Passeig de Gracia, Estacio de França and Sants.
The train journey takes around 45 minutes and the trains run very frequently from early morning until late at night. Make sure to check the train schedules beforehand as they can vary depending on the day of the week.
You can buy the train ticket at the ticket machines at the train station. There you can get either a single ticket or a return ticket. Make sure to keep the ticket after you enter the train as you will need it at the exit as well.
By the way, this is the same train that continues on to Tarragona, another stunning coastal city with so many great things to do like visiting an ancient Roman Amphitheater.
Day Trip from Barcelona to Sitges: Epic Itinerary
Morning: Coastal Hike
After enjoying some delicious vegan breakfast in Barcelona, I recommend catching the train to Vilanova i la Geltrú. Yes I know, it’s a Sitges day trip guide but if you catch the train to Vilanova you can start your day trip with an amazing coastal walk to Sitges.
During my day trip, I walked the coastal route from Sitges to Vilanova i la Geltrú. But I suggest walking the other way and ending the walk in Sitges so you can enjoy lunch, explore the city, and have a drink on the coast before heading back to Barcelona.
The coastal hike is so beautiful, you won’t regret making the detour to Vilanova. The walk is about 7 km long and it took me about 3 hours walking a slow pace and taking many breaks to take pictures.
There are also some hidden beaches along the way, so don’t forget to pack your swimwear and don’t forget to bring enough water.
Afternoon: Explore Sitges
Once you arrive in Sitges, you can get some lunch at a restaurant right next to the coast. Cinnamon was one of my favourite vegan restaurants in Sitges. It’s located right at the waterfront and they have really delicious Indian cuisine.
After lunch it’s time to explore the best things Sitges has to offer. Here are some of my suggestions:
- Visit the Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla: The iconic church is located right in the center of Sitges and offers stunning views over the town.
- Relax on the Beaches: Sitges has several beautiful beaches to choose from, each with its own unique charm.
- Explore the Old Town: Wander through the narrow streets of the old town and admire the vibrant atmosphere and the local shops.
- Visit Palau Maricel: This beautiful, historical building houses a museum and offers stunning views over the coast.
- Sitges Museums: Sitges has a variety of interesting museums, including the Museu del Cau Ferrat and the Museu de Maricel.
Evening: Sunset and Drinks
To end your day trip to Sitges in the best way possible, make sure to catch the sunset at one of the beach bars or restaurants along the coast.
There’s nothing quite like watching the sun go down over the sea while sipping on a refreshing cocktail or enjoying some local wine.
Afterwards, you can catch a train back to Barcelona from the train stations in Sitges. Make sure to check the train schedules beforehand so you don’t miss the last train back.
