Sitges to Vilanova Walk: Scenic Coastal Trail with Stunning Views
If you’re looking for a scenic coastal adventure near Barcelona, the Sitges to Vilanova walk is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. This stunning trail offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and passes beautiful coves perfect for swimming.
To make the most of your day, I recommend setting off early so you have time for beach breaks and a swim along the way, something I missed out on by starting too late. The walk took me about 3 hours at a slow pace with plenty of photo stops.
With train stations at both Sitges and Vilanova, it’s an easy day trip from Barcelona. Just a heads-up: the path isn’t on Google Maps and signs are scarce, but I’ll show you how to find it in this post.
Getting to Sitges and Vilanova
The train from Barcelona to Vilanova i la Geltrú stops in Sitges along the way, making this trail easy to access from either direction. You can choose to walk from Sitges to Vilanova, as I did, or start in Vilanova and end your hike with a meal in Sitges.
If you prefer finishing with dinner, walking from Vilanova to Sitges has the added bonus of ending in a lively town with plenty of dining options. I had an amazing vegan curry in Sitges at Cinnamon on another visit.
Train Details
Trains between Barcelona, Sitges, and Vilanova run frequently, at least every 20 minutes. I boarded at Barcelona Sants, but you can catch a train from other stations as well. Just be sure to check the train timetable on the Renfe website for the most up-to-date schedule.
Don’t forget: You only need a one-way ticket since you’ll be returning from a different station. So grab your ticket from the machine at the station, hop on the train, and you’re all set for your day trip to Sitges!
Trail Information for the Sitges to Vilanova Walk
- Starting Point: Sitges Promenade
Begin your walk in Sitges by heading south along the promenade. You can choose to walk on the promenade itself or directly on the beach if you prefer. Keep going until you reach Hotel Sunway Playa Golf & Spa, just before the large golf course. - Continue on the Beach
At this point, the promenade ends, and you’ll need to head down to the beach to continue your walk. Follow the coastline for a while here and enjoy the scenic views of the sea. - Choosing Your Path
Along the way you’ll encounter a few different paths. Don’t worry, they lead back together again further along the trail. Typically, you’ll find one path that leads up a small hill, offering a great views, and another that goes around the hill, keeping closer to the water. - Important: Stay on the Ocean Side of the Tracks
The important part is to always stay on the ocean side of the train tracks. Speaking of train tracks, in some parts, you walk really close to them, so be careful. - Arriving in Vilanova i la Geltrú
Once you reach Vilanova, you’ll find the train station near the end of the trail. If you’d like to explore the town before returning to Barcelona or Sitges, just walk past the station for a leisurely stroll. When you’re ready, head back to the station to catch your train.
Helpful Tips for the Coastal Hike
- Distance & Duration: The walk is approximately 7 km, depending on where you start and finish. We took a leisurely pace, with plenty of stops for photos, and it took us just under 3 hours. If you plan to spend time on the beaches, expect the walk to take longer.
- Bring Water: There are no places to buy water along the trail, so be sure to bring enough for the entire walk.
- Swimming: If you’re visiting during the warmer months, definitely pack a swimsuit and a towel!
- Footwear: While the walk is easy overall, the path is mostly made up of pebbles and stones. Comfortable shoes, like sneakers or hiking sandals, are a much better option than flip-flops.
- Pre-Walk Fuel: Make sure to enjoy a hearty vegan brunch in Barcelona before setting off, so you’re energized for the walk.
