A Brief History

Construction on La Sagrada Familia began in 1882. The original architect was Francisco de Paula del Villar. However, after only one year the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project and transformed it into his masterpiece.

Sadly, Gaudí wasn’t able to see his work completed as he passed away in 1926. At that time only a quarter of the church was finished. But Gaudí left detailed instructions and plans for the completion of the church, which are still being followed today.

Throughout the years construction was halted several times, by the Spanish Civil War, by the Second World War and most recently because of the Covid Pandemic.

The current head architect is Jordi Faulí, who took over in 2012.

It’s estimated that the main construction of Sagrada Familia will be completed by 2026, on the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death. Smaller decorative details won’t be finished before 2034.

Even though Sagrada Familia isn’t finished yet, mass is celebrated on special occasions inside the church, and the church is open to visitors.

Every Sunday, there’s a mass at Sagrada Família. A limited number of believers are allowed to attend the mass, but during this time the church is closed for visitors.
