Tavira is a small coastal town in the East of the Algarve region of Portugal near the Spanish boarder. It’s still a somewhat hidden gem that often gets overlooked by tourists.

It took my spending three weeks in the Algarve to finally do a day trip to Tavira and I loved it, the endless stretch of stunning beaches, the historic center with castle walls and the picturesque river running through the city center.

But that’s not all, continue reading to find out about all the best things to do in Tavira Portugal.

1. Find Your Favorite Beach

Strolling along the pristine sands of Tavira's coastline is a tranquil escape and a popular seaside activity for visitors enjoying the Algarve's natural beauty. — I loved the beautiful beaches with white sand in Tavira

Tavira is famous for its beautiful beaches, which are actually found on Tavira Island, not in the city itself. This natural barrier island stretches along the coast, providing miles of white sandy beaches and clear waters.

I recommend taking the ferry to Tavira Island and heading to Praia da Ilha de Tavira, just a short walk from the ferry. It has all necessary facilities but is also one of the busiest beaches.

If you’re looking for a more quiet and secluded beach just start walking west until you find the perfect beach. Don’t forget to bring enough water as there are no shops until you reach Praia do Barril.

2. Visit the Anchor Cemetery

Speaking of Praia do Barril, while you’re there don’t miss out on the Anchor Cemetery. This unique attraction is located on the beach and consists of over 100 anchors that have been left behind by tuna fishing boats.

It’s probably not worth going out of your way to see it since all the anchors are fenced off but when you’re at Praia do Barril anyway it’s a interesting little stop to make.

3. Explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park

Ria Formosa is a protected area of lagoons, salt marshes, and barrier islands that stretches along the coast from Faro to Tavira. It’s home to diverse flora and fauna and offers endless opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and boat tours.

The best way to get a glimpse at this unique ecosystem is by taking the Touristic Train – Praia do Barril from the beach back to the mainland. Alternatively, you can also walk next to the train tracks.

Once you arrive at Trilho do Barril, catch a bus or taxi back to the city center of Tavira. On the way you can stop at Santa Luzia, a small town just outside Tavira.

4. Have a Drink at Praça da República

Praça da República, also known as the main square of Tavira, is a great place to relax and people-watch. It’s lined with cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a refreshing drink or grab a bite to eat.

This square is also home to many events and festivals throughout the year, so keep an eye out for any upcoming festivities during your visit. When I visited they were just setting everything up for a concert the following day.

5. Relax at Jardim do Coreto

Jardim do Coreto is a cute little green oasis in the heart of Tavira. It features beautiful greenery, lot of benches and a central bandstand.

It’s a great place to escape the summer heat in the shade of the trees. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a live music performance in the evening.

6. Walk the Castle Walls

One of the main attractions in the old town is Tavira Castle. You can walk along the walls and enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside.

Besides the outer walls there isn’t that much left of the castle, but I think the walls are the coolest part anyway and it’s completely free to climb them.

From the castle you can also see the Tavira Camera Obscura in the old water tower. Unfortunately, it’s only open during high season. As I visited in September I couldn’t go inside the converted water tower.

7. Visit the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo

The white-washed walls and historic clock towers of Tavira's castle and church are highlights for travelers seeking cultural landmarks in the Algarve region. — The church is just behind the castle walls.

Right next to the castle is the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, a beautiful church dating back to the 13th century.

You have to pay a few euros entrance fee to visit the church, a small museum and the bell tower. Just the panoramic view from the bell tower is worth it.

8. See a Fado Show

Fado is the traditional music style of Portugal, known for its soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. And there’s no better place to experience it than in Tavira.

There are multiple venues where you can enjoy a Fado show. A very popular place is the Fado com História, sometimes they even have performances in the church next door, Igreja da Misericórdia.

9. Cross the Old Bridge

The Ponte Romana, also known as the Old Roman Bridge, is a popular spot for photos in Tavira. But it’s not just pretty to look at, you can actually walk across it to get to the other side of the river.

On the opposite side, you’ll find more restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy a meal or drink with a view of the city.

10. Enjoy a Delicious Baked Good by the River

Relaxing by the Gilão River with a good book on a sunny day, with views of Tavira's white buildings in the background, is one of the most serene things to do in Tavira, Portugal. — I ate the bread roll before I could take a picture.

I love bread and I’m very picky about bread. So I was very pleasantly surprised by the delicious fresh baked bread rolls from Mr. Portuguese Bakery. They also have cakes and other baked goods, with plenty of clearly labeled vegan options.

I enjoyed my bread roll by the River Gilão, eating it so quickly I forgot to take a photo. However, the spot was so nice that I stayed longer to read my book.

11. Shop at the Mercado da Ribeira

Visiting the spacious and elegantly structured Tavira market, showcasing local shops and crafts under a wooden-beamed roof, ranks high on the list of the best things to do in Tavira, Algarve. — The market was closed when I visited.

The Mercado da Ribeira is the local market in Tavira where you can find fresh produce, and other local products. It’s a great place to find some Portuguese souvenirs or some snacks for your day exploring Tavira.

Unfortunately, most shops were closed when I visited. But since the market is so centrally located it’s easy to just hop in and see what’s open.

Don’t worry if the market is closed, there are plenty of cute little artisan shops in Tavira.

12. Eat at the Only Vegetarian Restaurant in Town

For lunch head to the best and only vegetarian restaurant in town, Restaurante BiO.TEQUiM. It’s near the train station of Tavira, the food is very reasonable priced and delicious. I also really enjoyed the refreshing juice.

Just make sure to check the opening times before heading there since they are a bit limited.

13. See the Salt Pans and Flamingos

A short drive outside Tavira are the salt pans, where salt is still produced the traditional way. The area is also home to many pink flamingos, so keep your eyes peeled as you explore the pans.

You can reach this area by car or taxi from Tavira and it’s one of the best unusual things to do in Tavira Portugal.

As I only spent one day in Tavira, I didn’t have the time to visit the salt pans, but I saw some salt pans near Olhāo and it was a very cool experience. And I even saw some flamingos on the boat ride back to the city center from the beach.

Final Thoughts: What to Do in Tavira Portugal

Exploring Tavira’s old town and castle walls, enjoying delicious food, shopping at the local markets, and soaking in the sun at beautiful beaches while enjoying local music, Tavira offers an amazing mix of activities.

I absolutely loved my trip to Tavira. However, I wouldn’t necessarily pick it as a base to explore the rest of the Algarve due to its location. So if you’re looking to explore all the best places in the Algarve, Faro is as a great base for day trips, thanks to its central location.
