Top Olhão Boat Trips: Visit Ria Formosa’s Beaches & Islands
Ria Formosa Natural Park, off the coast of Olhão, is one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders, featuring car-free islands and stunning beaches waiting to be explored.
When I visited in late September, I chose a guided boat tour to see three islands in one day, and it was incredible, beautiful scenery, peaceful vibes, and no stress. Tours are great for visiting multiple spots, but if you’d rather relax on one beach, ferries might be a better option.
In this guide, I’ll share my experience and highlight the top boat trips from Olhão and ferry options to help you plan your perfect Ria Formosa trip.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ria Formosa – Boat trip to the 3 Islands
✅ Visit at least 3 different beaches
✅ I did this tour and loved it
✅ Max of 11 people
What is the Ria Formosa National Park?
The Ria Formosa National Park is a system of barrier islands with six inlets to the ocean. It’s the most important wildlife sanctuary in the Algarve and one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal. It’s also the southernmost point of Portugal besides the Island of Madeira.
Why Take a Boat Trip from Olhão?
A Olhão boat trip is the perfect option if you want to see multiple places in the Ria Formosa National Park in one day. You’ll visit different picturesque villages and beautiful beaches all in one day.
However, if you already know exactly where you want to go and you’d like to spend a whole day in one place then the ferry would be a better option for you.
What Islands Can You Visit in Ria Formosa?
There are different islands you can visit from Olhão and even on the same island, there are multiple stops boats can make, among them some of the most beautiful beaches near Olhão.
- Culatra Island is the biggest and most popular island; every boat tour goes here for at least one-stop
- Praia Culatra the main beach of Culatra Island, which is accessible by foot from Ilha Culatra, a fisher town where the harbour is located
- Praia Deserta is on the eastern end of Culatra Island and there’s nothing but beautiful sand and ocean. It’s the most quiet beach.
- Ilha do Farol is a small village on the western end of Culatra Island. It’s known for its lighthouse but it also has a cute little beach bar with relaxed vibes.
- Ilha da Armona is a picturesque little holiday village. There are almost no permanent residents but during summer the village comes to live. The main beach on the ocean side is Praia da Armona (Mar). The northern part of Armona island is often called Fuseta Island as it’s next to the town Fuseta.
- Ilha Deserta is literally a deserted island. There are no people actually living on the island. It’s known for its unspoiled nature.

The 3-Hour Boat Tour in Ria Formosa by Sabino Boat Tours is a great tour if you’re short on time. You can do this tour and still have time to explore Olhão in one day.
This tour goes to Ilha da Culatra and Ilha Do Farol. You have time to stroll around the beautiful villages and you’ll be able to spend a little bit of time on the beach. But the downside of the shorter tour is that you don’t have much time to relax on the beach.

Information about the Olhão Ferries
If you’re planning to visit just one destination, the ferry is a great budget-friendly alternative to guided tours. While I was surprised by how affordable some tours are, ferries remain the cheapest option.
Key Ferry Routes:
- Olhão to Armona: This ferry takes you to Ilha da Armona, a peaceful island known for its quiet beaches and laid-back atmosphere.
- Olhão to Culatra and Farol: This route stops first at Ilha da Culatra, a fishing village, and then continues to Ilha do Farol, home to a picturesque lighthouse and beautiful views.
Important Tips:
- Timetable: Ferry schedules change depending on the season, so make sure to check the official ferry website for the most up-to-date information.
- Tickets: Tickets can be purchased easily at the marina in Olhão before boarding.
Note: If you want to visit Ilha Deserta, which isn’t serviced by the ferries, your best option is to take a water taxi from Olhão.
What to Bring on a Olhão Boat Trip
There are a few things you should bring to your boat tour:
- Enough drinking water, it can get very hot and for example on Praia Deserta there’s no shop or bar
- A swimsuit and a towel, you’ll want to go for a swim for sure at those beautiful beaches
- Suntan lotion, because of the ocean breeze you might not feel the heat that much but you can get a sunburn very quickly
- Flip-flops or shoes which can get sandy
- Maybe a hat to protect your head from the sun, hold it tight during the boat ride though so it doesn’t fly off
- A snack for the beach, I love to bring fresh fruit to the beach
🤩 I did this Ria Formosa tour from Olhão and loved it!
