7 Day Trips from Faro to Explore the Algarve (No Car Needed)

Don’t have a car in the Algarve? No problem. I spent weeks house sitting in the countryside outside Faro, and while spontaneous trips weren’t always easy, I still found incredible ways to explore, all without driving.

While my boyfriend stayed home with the pets, I grabbed an Uber into Faro and discovered just how easy it is to explore the Algarve by train. Faro is surprisingly well connected, making it the perfect base for day trips to beaches, historic towns, and even scenic island.

In this post, I’m sharing the best day trips I actually took. These are easy, scenic, and totally worth your time. Whether you’re craving coastal views, quiet charm, or a boat ride to a quiet island, you’ll find something here to add to your Algarve itinerary, no car required.

1. Benagil Caves: The Algarve’s Most Iconic Spot

A cave with a circular opening at the top and green water at the bottom; those are the famous Benagil caves in the Algarve
The famous Benagil Cave

There are two main ways to visit the Benagil Caves: by boat or by hiking to the top for a view from above. You can’t enter the cave on foot, and swimming is unsafe due to heavy boat traffic. If you want to visit from Faro a guided tour is your easiest and safest option.

The most popular is the van + boat tour. You’ll be picked up in Faro, driven to Benagil, and then board a short boat ride that takes you to the cave and nearby sea formations.

I did a boat tour (though from Albufeira), and seeing the cave from inside, with the sunlight streaming through the skylight, was absolutely incredible.

Alternatively, you can join a van + hike tour to the cliffs above the cave. You won’t see the inside, but you’ll get a completely different perspective of this iconic spot, and likely avoid the high-season crowds. I haven’t done the hike yet, but it’s top of my list for next time.

2. Lagos: Coastal Cliffs, Old Town Charm & Beach Relaxation

  • How to Get There: Direct train from Faro takes about 1h 45min. Return tickets cost under €20 and can be bought at the station or online. Trains run multiple times a day, but check the Portuguese rail website for up-to-date schedules.
  • Why Visit: For golden beaches, dramatic sea cliffs, charming old town, and the perfect blend of nature and history.

I spent two days in Lagos, but it also works well as a day trip from Faro, especially if you plan ahead. The charming old town is great for a slow morning stroll, with cobbled streets and the remnants of city walls giving you a taste of the region’s past.

But what really makes Lagos shine is the coastline. You can walk along the cliffs towards Ponta da Piedade or take a short boat tour to see the rock formations from below, both offer stunning views.

Don’t forget your swimsuit: there are plenty of golden-sand beaches where you can cool off between hikes or sightseeing.

3. Tavira: Charming Streets & Sandy Beaches

  • How to Get There: Direct train from Faro takes about 40 minutes. A return ticket costs around €7 and can be bought at the station or online. Check the time table here.
  • Why Visit: For a charming old town and sandy beaches.

Tavira is one of the most charming towns in the eastern Algarve, near the Spanish border. It’s known for its Roman bridge over the Gilão River and Tavira Castle, which offers lovely views over the town and surrounding countryside.

There are no beaches in Tavira itself, but the ferry to Tavira Island departs right from the town center near the Roman bridge. The boat ride is very scenic, and once you arrive, you’ll find a long stretch of sandy beach. The further you walk from the ferry stop, the quieter it gets.

4. Olhão: Island Hopping & Ria Formosa

I had the best time exploring the islands of the Ria Formosa Nature Park from Olhão
  • How to Get There: Just 10 minutes by train from Faro, with return tickets costing under €5. Trains run frequently throughout the day. Check the train time table here.
  • Why Visit: For an authentic Algarve experience, vibrant local markets, and access to the stunning islands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

I spent three weeks house sitting just outside Olhão, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots in the Algarve. This fishing town has a laid-back, local vibe that feels worlds away from the more touristy areas, and yet it’s so easy to reach from Faro.

From Olhão you can easily set off on a boat trip through the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The lagoons and shifting islands are incredibly peaceful, and it’s one of the best ways to spot migratory birds or just spend the day beach-hopping between sandy beaches.

5. Fuseta: Small Village Vibes & Beaches

  • How to Get There: A direct train from Faro takes about 20 minutes. Return tickets are about €5 and trains run several times daily. Check the train time table here.
  • Why Visit: For a peaceful and authentic Algarve experience and a relaxed beach day

Fuseta is a small fishing village that still feels wonderfully untouched by mass tourism. It’s quiet, authentic, and perfect if you’re craving a slower-paced day near the sea.

The main draw here is the beach right in town, with calm water and soft sand, ideal for a lazy swim or a barefoot walk along the shore. From the harbor, you can also hop on a boat to Culatra or Armona, two nearby islands that offer even more beautiful beaches.

6. Albufeira: Party Central

Bustling streets of Albufeira Old Town, thronged with tourists exploring local shops and restaurants, a must-visit for an authentic Albufeira, Portugal experience.
Albufeira old town is just a short walk from the best beaches
  • How to Get There: Buses from Faro to Albufeira take between 30 min and 1 hour (30 min walk from bus stop to center). The train takes 45 minutes, but the station is far from town, nearly an hour by public transport or a 10-minute taxi ride.
  • Why Visit: For nightlife, resort-style stays, and easy access to beaches from the old town

Albufeira is one of the best-known tourist destinations in the Algarve, famous for its beaches and buzzing nightlife. Personally, I don’t think it’s a must-visit, unless you’re specifically after a party atmosphere and all-inclusive hotel complexes. But I know many people love it.

That said, if you do go, don’t miss the tunnel from the old town to Praia dos Pescadores. I found it genuinely impressive, one moment you’re walking through cobbled streets, and the next, you’re stepping onto a wide sandy beach.

7. Portimão: City Vibes & Stunning Beaches

View of a tranquil beach with rolling waves and distinctive golden cliffs under a blue sky, located near Portimão, a popular day trip destination from Faro, Portugal accessible by train.

  • How to Get There: Direct train from Faro takes about 1.5 hours. A return ticket costs under €15. Check the train time table here.
  • Why Visit: For one of the Algarve’s largest cities, with a mix of city energy, coastal beauty, and one of the region’s most famous beaches.

Portimão is a vibrant city in the western Algarve, and I’ll be honest, it’s the only day trip on this list I haven’t done myself (yet!). But from everything I’ve seen and read, it’s firmly on my to-do list for my next Algarve trip.

The city is best known for Praia da Rocha, a wide golden-sand beach backed by dramatic cliffs, perfect for a beach day. You can also wander the old town, visit the lively marina, or just enjoy the atmosphere that comes with being one of the Algarve’s larger cities.

How to Get Around the Algarve

Many people rent a car when exploring the Algarve, but if you’re based in Faro, it’s really not necessary. Nearly all of the best day trips in this post can be done easily and affordably by regional train.

Trains in the Algarve are reliable, scenic, and budget-friendly. You can check schedules on the official Comboios de Portugal website. While you can buy tickets online, it’s also easy to get them directly at the station on the day of travel.

The only exception is the Benagil Caves, which aren’t easily accessible by public transport. In this case, I recommend joining a guided tour, they’re still affordable, and it’s the safest and easiest way to experience the caves either by boat or hike.

Final Thoughts: Day Trips in Algarve

Faro is the perfect base to explore some of the Algarve’s most beautiful destinations. Whether you want quiet island beaches, dramatic cliffs, charming old towns, or lively coastal cities, there’s a day trip that fits your vibe.

If you only have time for a few, I’d personally recommend Tavira for a peaceful escape, Lagos for its incredible coastline, and a Benagil Caves tour for that classic Algarve wow moment.
