Most Beautiful Beaches in Tavira Portugal & How to Get There

There might be no beaches in the city of Tavira itself but just outside the city there are some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole Algarve. The beaches are located on islands that can only be reached by a short boat ride, making it an exciting adventure.

On the islands you’ll find white sandy beaches and crystal clear water for miles and miles. Some beaches have all the amenities you could wish for while others are peaceful stretches of sand with hardly any people.

I visited Tavira on a day trip and exploring all the beautiful beaches there was my favorite thing to do. It’s just amazing how you can walk along the coast until you find your perfect spot amongst the best beaches in Tavira Portugal.

Praia da Ilha de Tavira

The most popular beach on Tavira Island

Praia da Ilha de Tavira is the most popular beach in Tavira. It’s located on the Ilha de Tavira, a large island just off the coast of Tavira.

It’s just a short walk from the ferry terminal to the beach. You’ll walk past holiday homes and a camping ground.

The beach has the most amenities out of all the beaches in Tavira. There are the standard beach bars, restaurants, a small supermarket, and sun launches to rent, but also a massage tent and also a little free library inside a barrel.

How cool is that little library?

How to Get to Praia da Ilha de Tavira

To get to Praia da Ilha de Tavira, you can take the ferry from the city center of Tavira or from Cais das Quatro รguas. From the ferry station the beach is just a 5-minute walk.

Praia do Barril

On the right side is the anchor cemetery and on the left the sun launches

Praia do Barril is another beautiful beach on the Ilha de Tavira. There are all the amenities you need at Praia do Barril, like beach bars, restaurants, a shop, and sun launches.

The main attraction at Praia do Barril is the Anchor Cemetery, a collection of anchors from old tuna fishing boats that were left on the beach. It’s a unique sight and definitely worth a visit.

How to Get to Praia do Barril

To best way to get to Praia do Barril, is by taking the mini train from Pedras D’el Rei. You can also walk next to the train tracks but I think taking the cute touristic train is quite fun. You’ll see the marshlands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park from a different perspective.

Praia do Terra Estreita

The more quiet Terra Estreita Beach

Praia do Terra Estreita is located on the Ilha de Tavira as well, almost halfway between Praia da Ilha de Tavira and Praia do Barril. It’s one of the less crowded beaches in Tavira.

There’s just one little beach bar and a few sun launches but otherwise there’s nothing besides endless sand.

So, make sure to bring enough water and maybe even some snacks when you go to the Estreita beach as the options there are limited.

How to Get to Praia do Terra Estreita

It is possible to catch a ferry from Santa Luzia, a small town outside Tavira, but the ferry from there is reported to be very unreliable.

The best way to reach Praia do Terra Estreita is on foot. I walked from Praia do Barril to Praia da Ilha de Tavira, stopping at Praia do Terra Estreita, and absolutely loved it. Strolling along the beach to find perfect swimming spots was one of my favorite things to do in Tavira.

Praia do Homem Nu

Strolling along the pristine sands of Tavira's coastline is a tranquil escape and a popular seaside activity for visitors enjoying the Algarve's natural beauty.
I loved the long and beautiful beaches in Tavira

Praia do Homem Nu is another secluded beach on the Ilha de Tavira. It’s located further away from the crowds, making it perfect for a peaceful and quiet day at the beach.

The name “Homem Nu” translates to “naked man” and even though it is a nudist beach you’ll find plenty of people with bathing suits as well. So, you can decide if you want to sunbath and swim naked or dressed.

How to Get to Praia do Homem Nu

To get to Praia do Homem Nu, you simply go to Praia do Barril either by for or by tourist train from Pedras de El-Rei and head west wards.

Praia de Cabanas

Praia de Cabanas is located on Ilha de Cabanas, the island east of Ilha de Tavira. There’s a restaurant and a beach bar available.

The beach is known for being less crowded since it can’t be reached by Ferry from Tavira. You need to go there by a small boat from Cabanas.

Praia dos Tesos is the only beach on the mainland near Tavira. It’s the perfect beach for a quick swim after visiting the Salinas do Forte do Rato, where you can learn about the salt production and it’s also a great place for wildlife spotting.

The water is nice and calm as the beach is sheltered by the barrier islands.

There are no amenities at the beach, so don’t forget to bring everything you need.

How to Get to Praia dos Tesos

Praia dos Tesos is a 7 minute car ride from Tavira. There’s a small car park near the beach which is reported to be full most of the time. Getting to Praia dos Tesos from Tavira city center on foot would take about 40 minutes.

How to Get to the Tavira Beaches

There are multiple ferry stations on the mainland. However not all ferry stations head to the same destinations.

The most convenient ferry station is in Tavira’s city center, just behind Mercado da Ribeira. The Ferry Ilha de Tavira runs often between the city center and Ilha de Tavira, with schedules varying by seasonโ€”check the ticket booth for times. There are no winter services to this station.

Cais das Quatro รguas is another option but it’s slightly further away from the city center. This is the best ferry station if you’re traveling by car as there’s a big carpark next to the station. It’s the same ferry which runs between Tavira city center and Ilha de Tavira.

If you’re staying in Santa Luzia or Cabanas, there are water taxis available to take you to the beaches on the islands.
