I usually prefer public transportation for day trips, but sometimes it’s not practical or simply too exhausting. The thought of coordinating multiple trains and buses to see Cadaqués, Figueres, and Port Lligat in one day felt overwhelming. So, I opted for a guided tour.

Taking a guided tour let me explore beautiful spots along the Costa Brava without worrying about logistics. It provided a stress-free way to visit these culturally rich destinations, allowing me to relax and enjoy the scenery instead of stressing over catching the next bus.

If you are set on traveling by train, I recommend only visiting Figueres, as it is easily accessible via a direct train from Barcelona-Sants. However, I do not suggest taking a day trip to Cadaqués from Barcelona by train and bus, as the journey nearly three hours one way.

Figueres is a small town close to the Costa Brava region and a great stop on the way to Cadaqués. You can stroll down the Figueres’ version of la Rambla and to be honest, it’s not very impressive. But I also find La Rambla in Barcelona overrated.

In the whole city, you notice pieces of art which point to the city’s most famous person: the surrealist artist Salvador Dali, who was born and died in Figueres.

However, chances are, the Dali museum is your only stop in this town.

The highlight of Figueres is the Teatre-Museu Dalí, where the eccentric artist spent his final years and is now buried. This museum is one of the most unique I’ve ever visited, both inside and out.

Originally a theater, the building itself is a surreal masterpiece. Be sure to walk around the exterior for a full view of its quirky design before heading inside.

Once you step into the inner courtyard, you immediately know this isn’t a typical museum. It’s filled with countless unusual elements and intriguing artwork.

The most captivating piece of art is in the main hall: from a distance, it appears to be a woman by a window, but up close, you’ll see a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. It’s such a unique and cool museum!

2. Stop on the Day Tour: Cadaqués

Cadaqués is a picturesque small town on the Costa Brava, with its whitewashed houses and blue doors giving it a Greek island vibe. The beachside view is stunning, and the coastal promenade is perfect for a nice stroll.

While the ocean views are beautiful, don’t miss the chance to explore the narrow, plant-filled alleys, where you’ll find some of the most charming corners of Cadaqués.

Summer can get crowded, but I visited in mid-October, and it was an ideal time. The weather was still warm, and the town was very quiet.

3. Stop on the Day Tour: Port Lligat

The main reason people visit Port Lligat is to see Dalí’s house. The house remains just as it was when Dalí lived there, offering a glimpse into his eccentric lifestyle.

If you’re on a tour, you won’t need to worry about transport or entrance tickets. However, if you’re visiting independently, there’s a small tourist bus from Cadaqués to Port Lligat. And don’t forget to book your ticket in advance as entrance tickets are limited.

When you’re greeted by a stuffed polar bear, it’s clear that Dali was not very vegan-friendly. This is confirmed later when you see his canary cage. He even kept crickets in tiny cages so he could fall asleep to their chirping. Overall, seeing his house was still very cool though.

You can also visit the garden with its unique phallus-shaped pool. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take pictures because my phone died and I had to leave my backpack with my power bank in a locker outside the museum. So, make sure your phone has enough battery before entering!

To be honest, a day trip from Barcelona to Cadaqués might not be worth it if you only visit the town itself. While Cadaqués is charming, there aren’t many activities to fill a full day.

What made the trip truly worthwhile for me were the Dalí stops. These unique experiences were a highlight, especially since I only knew “The Persistence of Memory” before the tour. Learning more about Dalí’s life and art was fascinating and such a unique experience.
