Wondering how to get to Harry Potter Studios from London? I’ve done the trip to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour just outside Watford three times, twice by train from London and once by car, and I can promise you it’s much easier than you might think.
Getting there by public transport is straightforward, affordable, and honestly the option I recommend after trying it myself.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through which train to take, how the free shuttle works, and the easiest way to pay for your ticket, plus when it might make sense to book a tour instead.

Best Way to Get to Harry Potter Studios From London
The Warner Bros. Studio Tour is located in Watford, about 20 miles (32 km) north of central London. After visiting three times, twice by public transport, I can confidently say the easiest and cheapest way to get there is by train + the free studio shuttle bus.
Here’s exactly how to do it:
Step 1: Take the Train to Watford Junction
For the train you have two options:
Fast train (recommended)
- Direct train
- Sets off at London Euston
- Around 20 minutes
- No stops
Slow train
- Around 45–50 minutes
- Multiple stops (South Hampstead, Kilburn High Road, Queens Park, etc.)
- Good option if you’re staying in North London
The last time I visited, I stayed near Kilburn High Road, so I took the slower train directly from there instead of going into Euston first. It saved time and was super convenient.
If you’re already near central London though, take the fast train from Euston, it’s much quicker.

Step 2: Take the Free Shuttle Bus to the Studios
Once you arrive at Watford Junction, follow the clearly marked signs for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour.
Right outside the station, you’ll see the official Harry Potter shuttle bus. It’s impossible to miss, the buses are fully branded.
- The shuttle is free
- You just need to show your studio entrance ticket
- The ride takes about 15 minutes
- Buses run approximately every 20 minutes
In my experience, the whole transfer from train to shuttle is very smooth. The signage is clear, and it’s designed specifically for studio visitors.
Can You Use Oyster or Contactless?
Yes. You can use your Oyster card or contactless bank card to travel from London to Watford Junction. Just tap in when you enter the station and tap out when you arrive.
It’s very straightforward, no need to buy a special ticket in advance.
Total Travel Time
From central London, the full journey usually takes about 40 min to 1.5 hours, depending on which train you take and how long you wait for the shuttle.
Why I Don’t Recommend a Tour from London
Even though it’s very easy to reach the Warner Bros. Studio Tour by train, you’ll also see plenty of tours that include transport from London.
Personally, I don’t think a tour with transport is necessary.
Public transport is cheaper, flexible, and straightforward. When you travel independently, you can stay at the studios as long as you like without worrying about missing a return bus.
When a Tour Might Make Sense
There are only two situations where I’d consider booking one:
- Official studio tickets are sold out: Some tour packages bundle entry tickets with coach transport from central London, which can be helpful during peak seasons when tickets sell out weeks in advance. You can get a combo ticket for entrance and transport here.
- You prefer having everything arranged for you
Practical Tips for Visiting Harry Potter Studios
- Book your tickets early on the official website. Entry is timed and often sells out weeks in advance, especially during school holidays.
- Arrive 15–20 minutes before your time slot. You can explore the entrance hall beforehand, and it’s better than feeling rushed.
- Use the free cloakroom. The tour takes 3–4 hours on average, so you’ll be much more comfortable without a heavy backpack or jacket.
- Factor in the intro film. The experience begins with a short introduction and movie before you enter the main studio areas.
- Expect food queues at peak times. There’s a restaurant and café near the entrance and another halfway through the tour. The food is decent (with labelled vegan options), but lines can get long around lunch.
- Butterbeer tip: The bottled version is vegan. The draft version served at the café includes non-vegan cream on top.
- Souvenirs: There is an amazing Harry Potter gift shop at the end, think beforehand about how much you want to spend.
