As someone who lives in neighboring Austria, I’ve been to Budapest many times, but this year was my first time visiting in winter, and I absolutely loved it! I’ll admit, I’m often hesitant about winter trips because I worry about being too cold, but Budapest changed my mind completely.

With its festive Christmas markets, cozy cafes, and the amazing thermal baths to warm up in, it’s the perfect winter destination. And now let’s have a look at the best things to do in Budapest in December.

1. Visit the Christmas Markets

December in Budapest wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Christmas markets.

From the bustling market at St. Stephen’s Basilica to the food stalls at Vörösmarty Square and the local charm of Óbuda’s main square, each market offers something special. That’s what I love most about them, they’re all so unique.

Stroll among stalls selling artisan crafts, enjoy festive treats like chimney cake and mulled wine, and soak in the holiday atmosphere with twinkling lights and live performances.

2. Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a fun thing to do in Budapest in winter. There are two main rinks to choose from.

The ice rink in City Park is incredible, not only is it one of the largest rinks in Europe, but it also offers stunning views of Vajdahunyad Castle, making every glide across the ice feel like a fairytale moment.

For a more central option, head to the ice rink at Városháza Park, right next to several Christmas markets. I especially love the festive atmosphere here, with Christmas lights twinkling above the ice.

3. Eat a Chimney Cake

No matter when you visit Budapest, you should eat some chimney cake, one of Hungary’s most famous traditional treats. These warm, sweet pastries are baked over an open fire and coated with sugar, creating a crispy exterior while staying soft and fluffy inside.

I had a delicious chimney cake at Városháza Park, right next to the ice rink. They serve the traditional version (which is naturally vegan), so don’t expect touristy add-ons like Nutella here, just authentic chimney cake as it’s meant to be!

4. Marvel at the Christmas Lights

Budapest literally sparkles in December, with its streets and landmarks beautifully lit up for the season.

Over on Andrássy Avenue, Budapest’s grand boulevard, the whole street is decorated with glittering lights, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for an evening stroll.

5. Stroll Through the Lumina Park

For a magical evening in Budapest, head to Lumina Park on Margaret Island, the island in the Danube river. Margaret Island is easily accessible by public transport or on foot.

Lumina park only opens at 4:30pm and is open till 9pm (it’s closed on the 24th of December). It features creative and colorful light installations. Strolling through its illuminated displays feels magical and will get you in a Christmassy mood.

6. Have a Drink in a Rooftop Igloo

For a cozy and unique winter experience in Budapest, head to the 360° Bar and enjoy a drink in one of their rooftop igloos. These transparent, heated igloos are the perfect spot for a warm drink with view over the city’s rooftops.

You can simply ride the elevator up and try your luck for availability, but to guarantee your spot, it’s a good idea to book a table in advance. Whether you’re sipping mulled wine or a refreshing cocktail, this is a winter experience in Budapest you won’t forget!

7. Relax in a Thermal Bath

The thermal spas in Budapest are an absolute must during a December visit! I’ve tried out a few so far, and while the Széchenyi Baths are the most famous, I found them a bit too crowded for my taste.

My personal favorite is the Rudas Bath, with its relaxing atmosphere and incredible views from the rooftop pool. There’s nothing quite like soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters while the crisp winter air surrounds you.

8. Watch the Nutcracker

Seeing The Nutcracker at the Hungarian State Opera House is a classical way to celebrate the holiday season in a beautiful historic building.

Even if you’re not planning to watch the performance, the Opera House itself is worth a visit. A beautiful Christmas tree stands in front of the building, and you can step inside to admire the stunning lobby for free. There’s even a nutcracker statue in the lobby!

9. Go to a Museum

Budapest’s museums are the perfect escape from the chilly December weather, offering interesting insights into the city’s rich history and culture. Here are some of the best museums to visit:

Hungarian National Museum: Learn about Hungary’s history, from ancient artifacts to modern events.
Museum of Fine Arts: Admire an impressive collection of different eras from ancient Egypt to modern art pieces.
House of Terror Museum: Learn about Hungary’s dark past under fascist and communist regimes in this powerful and moving exhibit.

No matter the season, exploring Budapest’s Castle District is always a highlight. This historic area on the Buda side of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s filled with cobblestone streets, stunning architecture, and incredible views of the Danube and Pest skyline.

Explore landmarks like Buda Castle, Matthias Church, and the Fisherman’s Bastion. While entry requires a fee, you can enjoy strolling around and admiring the exteriors for free, one of the best free activities in Budapest.

11. Take a Tour Through the Parliament

The Christmas Trams are decorated with thousands of twinkling fairy lights and make for a great photo opportunity in Budapest. There are multiple of these festive trams, the easiest to get to as a tourist is tram number 2 which runs next to the Danube river.

13. Try some Traditional Hungarian Foods

Sampling traditional Hungarian dishes is a must when visiting Budapest, and the city’s amazing vegan restaurants ensure everyone can enjoy them. From hearty goulash to lángos (fried flatbread), you’ll find delicious plant-based versions that rival the originals.

For something sweet, Hungarian cakes are a treat to try. While the New York Café is a popular spot for its opulent setting, I personally find it a bit overrated—you can get equally delicious cakes at other charming cafes around the city, often for much less and without the long wait!

Budapest in December Weather

Budapest in December is chilly, with temperatures typically ranging from -1°C to 5°C (30°F to 41°F). But if you’re asking: Does it snow in Budapest in December? I have to disappoint you, snow is unlikely in December but it’s possible. Higher chances of snow are in January though.

Most days in December are cold and crisp, so bundling up in a warm coat, scarf, and gloves is a must, especially if you plan to explore the outdoor Christmas markets or go ice skating.

Despite the cold, the cozy cafes, thermal baths, and festive lights make it a wonderful time to visit!
