Christmas Markets in Budapest to Get You in a Festive Mood

One of the things I love most about the Christmas markets in Budapest is how unique they are. In so many other cities, it can feel like every market is offering the same stalls with just a few differences, but in Budapest, it’s completely different.

There are so many artisan crafts, handmade gifts, and even second-hand treasures that make exploring each market exciting and special.

From the delicious hot punch I tried in front of the Basilica to the quirky finds in Gozsdu Court, every market has its own personality. If you’re visiting Budapest in December, you’re in for a festive treat. Here are the best Christmas markets to check out!

1. Market at the Cathedral

14th Nov 2025 to 1st of Jan 2026: 11am to 10pm (shorter on 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st of Dec and 1st Jan)

The biggest Christmas market in Budapest is at Szent István tér in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, one of the most iconic sights in Budapest. The huge Christmas tree in the middle, the beautiful Christmas lights, and the stalls packed with artisan gifts and tasty treats make it a must-visit.

I had the most delicious punch at a stall called Forralt Bor on the street leading up to the Basilica. It was so good, and you could add dried fruit and orange slices for free!

The only downside of this Christmas market is how crowded it gets. It’s easily the busiest market in Budapest, so keep that in mind if you’re heading there.

2. Vörösmarty Square

14th Nov to 31st Dec 2025: 11am to 9pm (shorter on 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st of Dec)

The Christmas market at Vörösmarty tér is the best spot for food (if you’re not vegan)! There are lots of food stalls offering traditional Hungarian dishes and more. The sitting area is surprisingly spacious, much bigger than what I’ve seen at the Christmas markets in Vienna.

Alongside the food, there are plenty of non-food stalls too, with lots of unique, handmade items that give this market an authentic feel.

3. Deák Ferenc Square

14th Nov to 31st of Dec 2025: 10am to 8pm

The Christmas lights on Deák Ferenc utca, also known as Fashion Street, are a top winter attraction in Budapest. At the end of the street on the Deák Ferenc tér square you can find some Christmas stalls.

4. Erzsébet Square

I’ll be honest I was a bit disappointed with the market at Erzsébet tér. The square is known for the Ferris wheel and it’s a cool place to hang out in Budapest.

But from where the stalls are you don’t really have a view of the Ferris wheel and I kind off liked the stalls at the other markets better.

But hanging out at Erzsébet Square is one of the cool free things to do in Budapest, and while you’re there, check out the market stalls. I found a really cool one with chess boards, including one for three players!

5. Gozsdu Court

Weekend Market (Fridays to Mondays): 10am to 5pm

Gozsdu Court is one of Budapest’s coolest spots to explore. This covered alley is lined with unique stalls, making it fun to wander through no matter the season. Most stalls don’t sell specific Christmas things but the alley it’s decorated with festive lights during the holidays.

The stalls are super authentic, selling everything from second-hand treasures like old cameras (and even a gas mask!) to handmade items. I even watched a vendor crafting jewelry right at her stall, it doesn’t get more unique than that!

If you’re after something truly one-of-a-kind, Gozsdu Court is definitely worth a visit.

6. Klauzál Square

30th Nov, 7th, 14th of Dec 2024: 10am to 5pm (more info see here)

The Christmas market at Clauzál Square Market Hall is a hidden gem for those who love sustainable shopping. Held indoors, this market focuses on eco-friendly and handmade products, making it a dream for finding thoughtful and unique gifts.

It sounds absolutely amazing, but unfortunately, it’s only open on the three Sundays leading up to Christmas, so I missed it during my visit.

If you’re visiting Budapest in December, try to plan your trip to include a Sunday before Christmas, I know I will!

7. Vajdahunyad Castle

The Christmas market at Vajdahunyad Castle is set in one of Budapest’s most unique locations. Unfortunately, I missed it since it only opens on the 6th of December, making it one of the latest markets to start. But if it’s anything like the castle itself, it’s sure to be amazing!

The castle’s fairytale-like architecture provides the perfect backdrop for a festive market. When I visited, the ice skating rink in the park nearby was already open, it’s the biggest I’ve seen in a city and such a fun winter activity in Budapest.

8. Castle Garden in Buda

The Castle Garden Christmas Market is the only Christmas market located on the Buda side of Budapest. Open only on the Sundays in December leading up to Christmas, it offers a special festive experience in a stunning setting by the Castle Garden.

I missed it due to its limited hours, but the location alone makes special. If you’re in Budapest on a Sunday before Christmas, this market is a great chance to explore the Buda side and relax in my favorite thermal bath nearby.

9. Main Square in Óbuda

28th Nov to 23rd of Dec 2025: Weekdays 2pm – 9pm, Weekends 10am to 10pm (see here for more info) Ice skating rink is open till 15th Jan 2026

The Christmas market on the fö tér in Óbuda is a hidden gem just outside Budapest’s city center. Its location gives it a more authentic and local vibe, making it a refreshing change from the bustling central markets.

The market features great stalls offering handmade gifts and festive treats, along with a fun ice skating rink that’s perfect for families. On weekends, the square comes alive with free concerts by Hungarian performers, adding a unique cultural touch to the holiday atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a festive experience with fewer crowds, this market is well worth the trip!

Strolling through Budapest’s Christmas markets is a great way to enjoy the Advent time. It’s truly one of the best destinations in Europe for visiting Christmas markets.

Whether you’re admiring the lights in front of the cathedral, looking for hidden gems in Gozsdu Court, or enjoying the charm of Óbuda’s local vibe, there’s something special to discover at every market.
