10 Best Places in the Algarve: Best Towns & Nature Spots
The Algarve, located in the southernmost region of Portugal, is known for its stunning coastline, sunny weather, and charming towns. With so many great places to visit, it can be overwhelming to narrow down your options.
I’ve spent 3 weeks in the Algarve region visiting multiple beautiful destinations. For everyone who doesn’t have weeks to explore the Algarve, I’ve compiled a list of the 10 best places in the Algarve – from picturesque towns to breathtaking nature spots and picturesque beaches.
Best Nature Places in the Algarve
1. Benagil Caves
The Benagil Caves are a must-visit for anyone traveling to the Algarve. These sea caves can only be accessed by boat or kayak and offer a unique experience. The stunning rock formations and crystal-clear water make for great photo opportunities.
I did a boat tour from Albufeira, but you can also do a boat tour from Faro to the Benagil Caves or from Lagos. The great thing about boat tours is that you get the chance to see dolphins on the way.
2. Ponta da Piedade
Ponta da Piedade is another nature spot that shouldn’t be missed. Located near Lagos, this picturesque location features stunning cliffs and rock formations that will take your breath away.
You can either take a boat tour or walk along the cliffs for an incredible view. I did both, the boat tour and the walk, during my two days in Lagos and it was absolutely amazing.
3. Ria Formosa Natural Park
Ria Formosa is a unique natural park consisting of lagoons, wetland, and barrier islands. It’s located in the eastern part of the Algarve.
This diverse ecosystem is home to a variety of migratory birds, fish, and other wildlife. You can explore the park by boat or on foot along their designated trails.
The barrier islands, such as Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Culatra, are also worth a visit for their beautiful sandy beaches. They are among the most beautiful beaches in the whole Algarve.
Best Towns in the Algarve
4. Lagos
Lagos is a charming town with a bustling historic center, beautiful beaches, and a stunning coastline. My favourite things to do in Lagos are strolling through its cobbled streets, relaxing at the beach, and visiting Ponta da Piedade.
In the summer months it can get very crowded, but Lagos is still worth visiting. I would simply recommend to visit in the shoulder seasons instead.
5. Tavira
Tavira is a smaller town located in the eastern Algarve. It’s known for its charming streets, historic castle, and beautiful beaches.
My favorite thing to do in Tavira was to walk from the anchor cemetery at Praia do Barril to Praia da Ilha de Tavira. The walk offers stunning views and the Tavira beaches along the way are perfect for a day in the sun.
6. Faro
Faro is the capital of the Algarve and a great place to start your trip. It’s a lively city with a historic old town, museums, and a marina. While most people skip it to head straight for other destinations in the Algarve I think Faro is worth visiting for at least a day or two.
Faro is also a great base for day trips to explore the most beautiful places in Algarve without a car. There are also multiple beautiful beaches near Faro that you can explore by boat.
7. Olhรฃo
Olhรฃo is a small fishing village located near Faro. It’s one of the best places to visit in the Algarve if you’re looking for a more authentic experience.
One of my favourite thing to do in Olhรฃo was to learn about local legends by finding statues around the city and reading through the stories. I also loved my boat trip from Olhรฃo to the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa.
8. Sagres
Sagres is a town located on the westernmost point of the Algarve. It’s known for its stunning cliffs, beautiful beaches, and great surf spots.
A short distance outside the city center is Cabo de Sรฃo Vicente, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. The views from there are absolutely breathtaking and perfect for a sunset picnic.
9. Albufeira
Now, Albufeira often finds its way onto lists of must-visit places in the Algarve. It’s the go-to for many seeking sun, sea, and a vibrant nightlife scene.
If you ask me, Albufeira is not worth visiting, especially if you’re after an authentic Portuguese atmosphere. The city is packed with tourists mainly there for the party scene, which might be great for people looking to party and don’t mind crowded beaches, but it’s not for me.
For an authentic Algarve experience, consider exploring the other towns and nature spots I’ve mentioned.
Best Beaches in the Algarve
There are so many gorgeous beaches in the Algarve, it’s impossible to list them all here, so I’ll just give you a taste with one standout example.
10. Praia da Marinha
Praia da Marinha is often considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and for good reason. The golden sand, crystal-clear water, and stunning cliffs make it a must-visit destination in the Algarve.
Take a walk along the cliffs for breathtaking views or relax on the beach and soak up the sun. It’s truly a picturesque paradise.
