Spending 2 Days in Faro? Here’s How to Make the Most of It

Most travelers pass through Faro on their way to other parts of the Algarve, but they’re missing out. Faro isn’t just the main transport hub in the region, it’s a destination in its own right, with a charming old town, peaceful island beaches, and a surprisingly great vegan food scene.

After spending time here myself, I’ve come to see Faro as the perfect spot for a short stay. In this 2-day Faro itinerary, I’ll show you exactly how to make the most of your time.

Day one is all about exploring the city, while day two is tailored to your travel style. Whether you’d prefer a relaxing beach day or a scenic day trip by train, this guide has you covered.

Day 1: Explore the Best of Faro

Morning: Explore the Old Town

Arco da Vila: The most famous city gate of Faro

Start your day in Faro’s charming old town. Pass through the Arco da Vila, stroll along the cobbled streets, and admire the mix of Moorish and Portuguese architecture. Don’t miss the Faro Cathedral inside the old city walls, the views from the tower are worth the climb.

You don’t need a strict plan here, the old town is compact and made for slow wandering. Keep an eye out for street art, tile-covered buildings, and little local shops tucked down quiet alleys.

Lunch: Refuel at Vegan Box

A colorful vegan meal at a café in Faro, Portugal, featuring a slice of pizza with vibrant toppings and a crispy empanada, complemented by a fresh orange juice, showcasing local culinary delights to enjoy over 2 days in Faro Portugal.
My vegan snacks from the Vegan Box

For a quick and affordable lunch, head to Vegan Box. They have vegan versions of typical snack food in Portugal and great fresh juices, perfect after a morning on your feet. It’s a casual spot, but the food is packed with flavor and great value.

Prefer something lighter? Stop by Oakberry Açaí for a customizable açaí bowl. It’s a great option if you’re craving something fresh, fruity, and cold, especially in the summer heat.

Afternoon: Visit the Bone Chapel & Stroll the Marina

In the afternoon, head to the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) inside the Igreja do Carmo. It’s small but striking, lined with real human bones and skulls, a reminder of the area’s history and one of Faro’s most unique sights.

From there, make your way toward the Faro marina. The palm-lined promenade is a relaxing place to walk off lunch, people-watch, or simply sit by the water. This area comes alive in the late afternoon, with boats returning and locals out for a stroll.

Dinner: Try Creative Vegan Cuisine at Outro Lado

Wrap up your first day with dinner at Outro Lado. The menu changes often, but the food is always inventive and full of flavor. It’s the perfect place to slow down and reflect on your first day in the Algarve.

Day 2: Your Choice, Relax or Explore Beyond Faro

After a full day discovering Faro’s historic center and soaking in the city vibes, Day 2 is yours. Want to take it slow with sun and sand? Head to Faro Island. Prefer to see more of the Algarve? Hop on a train and explore one of the nearby towns or natural wonders.

Option A: Relax on Faro Island

A serene beach setting in Faro with visitors enjoying the sun and sea, a prime example of the relaxing activities to enjoy while exploring things to do in Faro.
The main beach of Faro on the Atlantic Ocean

Take the ferry to Ilha de Faro (Faro Island). It sets off near the Porta Nova city gate and you can just buy the ticket on the spot. The ride itself is scenic and sets the tone for a chill day.

Once there, you’ll find a long stretch of beach with soft sand and plenty of space, especially if you walk a little away from the main area near the pier. Set up for a slow day: swim, read, nap, and just enjoy the rhythm of the ocean.

There are a few casual beach cafés near the ferry stop where you can grab something to eat, but you might want to pack some water and snacks if you’re staying a while.

Option B: Take a Day Trip by Train

If you’re feeling more adventurous, use Faro as your base and spend the day exploring another beautiful spot in the Algarve. All of these spots are easily reachable by train or guided tour, no car needed.

Day Trip Ideas:

  • Ria Formosa Boat Tour: Learn about this unique lagoon ecosystem while visiting picturesque islands only accessible by boat.
  • Tavira: Peaceful and traditional, with cobbled streets and a ferry to stunning island beaches.
  • Lagos: Dramatic coastal cliffs, golden beaches, and a vibrant old town full of charm.
  • Benagil Caves: Best visited on a guided tour. You can choose to see the caves by boat or hike to the top for a quieter view.
  • Olhão: A laid-back fishing town with local markets and boats to the Ria Formosa islands.

Best Time to Visit Faro

The best time to visit Faro is during the shoulder seasons, late spring (April to May) or early autumn (September to October). You’ll get warm, sunny weather without the intense summer crowds, and prices for accommodation are often a bit lower too.

I visited in September and absolutely loved it, perfect for sightseeing and beach time.

If you’re after a classic beach holiday, June to August is still a great choice. Just be ready for higher temperatures, bigger crowds, and peak-season prices. For a quieter vibe, simply visit one of the nearby island and walk further away from the ferry drop off point.

Where to Stay in Faro

Faro has plenty of great accommodation options, from stylish boutique hotels to charming apartments in the old town. Here are two standout picks based on my research:

7 Styles Apartments by Raspberry Cascade: Perfect if you prefer a cozy apartment stay. It’s located right near the old town and each unit has its own unique design.

The Roots Hotel: A modern and stylish hotel offering excellent value for money. It’s just a short walk from the marina and Faro’s main sights, making it a super convenient base.

📍 I love how well-located and affordable The Roots Hotel is! Check prices and availability here

One of the best things is to simply enjoy the great weather and some ice-cream

How Many Days in Faro Do You Need?

You can see the main highlights of Faro in one full day, the charming old town, the bone chapel, and a marina walk all fit comfortably into a relaxed itinerary.

After that, it really depends on you. How many days do you want to relax on sandy beaches? How many day trips do you want to squeeze in? Faro is a great base for both, whether you’re after peaceful beach time or scenic train rides to nearby towns.
