Is Albufeira Worth Visiting? Why I Don’t Think It Is
There are some truly amazing places in the Algarve region in Southern Portugal. But, when it comes to the question, “is Albufeira worth visiting?”, I’ll be honest with you — I don’t think it is.
I only spent one day in Albufeira and that was already too much in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, there are some top things to do in Albufeira but ultimately the cons outweigh the pros and there simply are so many better places to visit in the Algarve.
I would only recommend Albufeira to people who love to party for other travellers and to families with kids as there are some great waterparks in the area.
Let me explain why.
Reasons Why Albufeira Is Not Worth Visiting
The Party Scene
Albufeira is known as the party capital of the Algarve and for good reason. “The Strip” is lined with bars, clubs, and restaurants all offering loud music, cheap drinks, and a lively atmosphere.
With the name you can already guess where Albufeira got it’s inspiration, but while I enjoyed walking down the iconic Strip in Las Vegas even though I don’t like to drink and gamble, walking down the Strip in Albufeira just seemed a bit depressing to me to be honest.
Now, for some people that might be a reason to visit but for me, it was a major turnoff. The constant noise, crowds of rowdy and drunken tourists were not my cup of tea.
Overcrowded
Many places in the Algarve have to struggle with over-tourism in the summer months, that’s why I think fall is the best time to visit the Algarve, but in Albufeira it’s a whole new level.
The streets are filled with people, the beaches are overcrowded, and even finding a spot to sit in a restaurant can be a challenge. It just takes away from the relaxing vacation vibe I was looking for.
Lack of Authenticity
One of the things I love about traveling is experiencing different cultures and immersing myself in the local way of life. In Albufeira, I felt like immersing myself in British culture instead of Portuguese one.
Don’t get me wrong, I love visiting the UK, but if I wanted a British holiday, I would have booked a trip to London or Manchester. In Albufeira, it was hard to find any authentic Portuguese experiences among the Irish pubs and Full English Breakfast places.
Accessibility & Walkability
I love how affordable and convenient train journeys are in the Algarve. Nearly every town has a train station close to the city center, except for Albufeira. It’s the only major city in the Algarve where the train station is a 15 minute car ride away from the city center.
And once you arrive in Albufeira you’ll notice the attractions are quite spread out. You can walk everywhere, I did, but be prepared to walk a LOT. Alternatively, you can also get a ticket for the mini tourist train which circles all the attractions.
Better Options in the Algarve
Lastly, and most importantly, there are just so many other amazing places to visit in the Algarve that I would recommend over Albufeira. The charming coastal town of Lagos offer the most incredible coastline in the Algarve. I spent 2 days is Lagos and absolutely loved it.
Tavira, in the east of the Algarve, offers both incredible beaches and a historic city center perfect for exploring.
If you’re looking for a more authentic coastal city I can recommend Olhāo or Fuseta. Both are located inside the stunning Ria Formosa National Park, they have a cute old town and easy access to stunning beaches.
Reasons Why Albufeira Might Be Worth Visiting
Now, I don’t want to completely bash on Albufeira because it does have some good qualities that might make it worth a visit for some people. But I will always add other destinations in the Algarve which offer similar attractions without the party vibes.
Sandy Beaches
Albufeira has some beautiful beaches, there’s no denying that. The famous Praia do Peneco and Praia dos Pescadores are both easily accessible from the town center and offer soft golden sand and clear blue waters.
However, you can find equally stunning (if not more so) beaches in other towns along the coast. For beaches hidden between limestone cliffs head west of Albufeira towards Lagos and for wide sandy beaches head east and explore the beaches near Olhāo.
Water Sports
If you’re a fan of water sports, Albufeira might be a great place for you. The beaches here offer plenty of opportunities for jet skiing, parasailing, and kayaking. There are plenty of providers on the beach since it’s so touristy.
But again, these activities can be found in other towns as well. Some of the best places for kayaking for example are Lagos and Benagil since you get to go really close to the impressive cliffs.
Old Town Charm
Despite the touristy atmosphere, Albufeira old town still has some charm to it. The narrow streets lined with white-washed buildings are a nice escape from the chaos of the Strip.
But, again, there are many other towns in the Algarve that offer a more authentic and less touristy old town experience. I was quite surprised by the old town of Faro with it’s imposing cathedral and city walls.
Water Parks
If you’re traveling with kids, Albufeira does have some great water parks like Aquashow and Aqualand. They offer a fun day out for the whole family and can be a nice break from the beach.
Day Trips from Albufeira
From Albufeira you can take day trips to other places like Lagos and Tavira. I did my boat trip to the famous Benagil Caves from Albufeira Marina and it was amazing, we saw dolphins on the way and we got to see many impressive rock formations and sea caves.
However, since the train station in Albufeira is so far outside the city center, it’s not the best base for day trips by train.
The best base for train trips is Faro, the capital of the Algarve region, since it’s very centrally located and has a great public transport system. And you can also take boat tours from Faro.
🐬 I love this boat tour to the Benagil Caves for the dolphins you see!
Best Time to Visit Albufeira
If you do decide to visit Albufeira, I highly recommend avoiding the high season summer months. The town is overcrowded and prices are higher during this time.
Instead, opt for a trip in the shoulder season (April/May or September/October) when the weather is still warm but the crowds have thinned out. I visited in September and I think it was a good time to visit the Algarve.
Final Thoughts: Is Albufeira Worth Visiting?
In my personal opinion, no, Albufeira is not worth visiting. It might be a fun destination for party-goers or those looking for a beach vacation with plenty of activities and amenities, but if you’re looking for an authentic Portuguese experience, there are many other destinations in the South of Portugal that I would recommend over Albufeira.
However, everyone’s travel preferences are different, so it ultimately comes down to what you’re looking for in a vacation. If Albufeira isn’t right for you either, don’t worry because there are plenty of other amazing places to explore in the beautiful region of the Algarve.
