Olhão is one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets, a fishing town that has managed to hold onto its authentic charm despite its growing popularity. With lively markets, charming streets, and easy access to Ria Formosa’s islands, it’s perfect for exploring the Algarve off the beaten path.
During my three weeks housesitting in the nearby countryside, I made it a point to visit Olhão whenever I could. From learning about local legends and discovering street art to floating in a salt water pool, every trip offered something special.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or hoping to discover something new, this guide will help you uncover the best things to do in Olhão.
1. Take a Boat Tour of the Ria Formosa

The Ria Formosa Natural Park just off the coast of the Algarve has has multiple beautiful barrier islands, marshlands and a lagoon system known for its biodiversity. There are many tour operators offering boat tours to explore the islands of the Ria Formosa.
I took a 5-hour boat tour and absolutely loved it. And I do recommend getting a 5-hour boat tour instead of a 2 or 3-hour boat tour so you have time to relax on the beautiful beaches.
Taking a tour is a great way to see the islands, and if you have more time, you can take a ferry to your favorite one the next day and spend the whole day there.

2. Relax at the Beach
Olhão itself doesn’t have any beaches, but regular ferries and water taxis can take you to nearby islands with some of the best sandy beaches in Olhão.
If it’s your first time, start with a boat tour to explore the islands. Once you’ve picked your favorite, take a ferry the next day and spend the whole day relaxing there.
Ferries depart from the terminal near the market, with regular trips to Ilha da Culatra, Ilha da Farol and Ilha da Armona. Each spot has a beautiful beach perfect for relaxing.
3. Go Shopping at Mercados de Olhão
Olhão is known for its fresh produce market in the whole area. The municipal market consists of two red-brick buildings. In one building is the largest fish market in the area and in the other building a big fruit and vegetable market.
As a vegan, I only visited the fruit and vegetable market. When I got close to the fish market, the strong smell of seafood hit me even from outside, and I immediately turned around! The fruit and vegetable market is in the left building when facing the ocean.
The market is open daily from 7 am to about 2 pm, except on Sundays. I picked up some fresh nectarines for my boat trip snack, they were absolutely delicious!
4. Admire Some Street Art About the Town’s History
On R. da Fábrica Velha, the history of this charming fishing town comes alive through stunning murals. These works of art were inspired by real-life photographs from the past, giving them an authentic feel.
The murals are truly captivating, and I loved seeing them up close. The only downside is that parked cars along the street can sometimes obstruct the view, which takes away from fully appreciating the artwork.
5. Stroll Through the Parks in Olhão
There are two cute little parks on either side of the market buildings in Olhão which are the perfect place to sit down and relax with a view of the harbour and the Ria Formosa lagoon.
The Jardim Pescador Olhanense is on the west side of the market and Jardim Patrão Joaquim Lopes on the east side of the market.
There are sun beds, benches, a playground, and small stalls selling beach towels, all in a great location by the waterfront. I loved relaxing on the uniquely shaped sun beds with a view of the harbour.
6. Learn About Local Legends
When I was walking through the streets of Olhão I accidentally stumbled upon an interesting statue of a beautiful woman connected to the ocean. The sign explained that several statues around Olhão share local legends with visitors.
Legend of Floripes
Zé, a local drunk, swore a beautiful Moorish lady visited the lighthouse every night at midnight. He eventually convinced his friend Julião to wait there with him.
The Moorish lady Floripes appeared and revealed her spell to him. The next day, Julião looked for Zé but he was already gone. Some say Floripes took the only man who truly loved her to North Africa.

Legend of Arraúl
According to legend, Arraúl was the only survivor when Atlantis sank. After his home was destroyed Arraúl’s misfortune continued when a whale swallowed him.
But the whale brought him to the Prainhas site, the site where Olhão was founded. To protect this beautiful coastal region Arraúl created Ria Formosa’s Barrier Islands.

Legend of the Big Eyed Boy
There was once a boy with big black eyes who appeared to the fishermen in Barreta. He never spoke but always cried, making the fishermen feel sorry for him.
The boy kept crying, and picking him up only made him seem heavier. So they left him crying in the streets.
Until one day he stopped appearing. It’s said that the lady Floripes took him with her to North Africa.

Legend of the Enchanted Moorish Boy
Legend tells of a mysterious boy who asked Manuel and his friends to let him join their games. He later revealed a hidden palace of treasure to Manuel, promising to stay with him forever, though only Manuel could see him.
But after Manuel’s mother took him to confession and communion, the mysterious boy disappeared forever.

Legend of Marim
In a palace in Marim lived a girl called Alina who fell in love with a troubadour, Abdalá. Her father disapproved of the love and sent the young troubadour on a wild goose chase, he was supposed to bring the far-away river spring to him within one night.
When Abdalá managed to fulfil his task, Alina’s father got so angry that he threw his daughter out of the window. Luckily she fell right into Abdalá’s arms and they escaped together.

7. Visit Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosário & Capela de Nosso Senhor dos Aflitos
The Parish Church of our Lady of the Rosary from the late 17th – early 18th century features one of the most impressive façades in the whole Algarve.
The Chapel of our Lord of the afflicted was added later to the back side of the parish church in the 20th century so the fisherman could come and pray anytime, day or night.
Today you can get a peek through the gates and see some beautiful traditional Azulejos, the blue tilted tiles from Portugal. I was very surprised to see wooden doll parts hanging next to the candles and I couldn’t figure out what they meant.
8. Float in a Salt Water Pool
While researching what to do in Olhão, I discovered Salinas do Grelha, a sea salt producer that uses traditional methods. They offer guided tours and, best of all, saltwater lakes where you can float just like in the Dead Sea.
Even though it’s a bit outside of Olhão and requires an appointment, I couldn’t resist checking it out. Floating was incredible—you just lift your feet, and you’re effortlessly weightless! The only downside was the water temperature, which was about 26°C, a bit cool for my taste.

9. Go for a Late Breakfast
Unfortunately, there are no vegan or vegetarian restaurants in Olhão. But there’s a great vegan option place: Figo de Pita. This cozy spot offers breakfast, brunch, and bowls, with vegan items clearly labeled on the menu.
I tried the avocado mushroom toast with a side of scrambled tofu, and it was absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a satisfying plant-based meal in Olhão, Figo de Pita is the place to go.
10. Enjoy the Sunset Over the Ocean
There’s something magical about a sunset by the ocean, isn’t there? In Olhão, the sky seems to glow extra orange, making sunsets in the Algarve truly unforgettable.
Take a leisurely stroll along the marina to soak in the breathtaking views. But for an even more memorable experience, consider a sunset boat tour. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while the water sparkles around you is simply magical.

11. Have a Look at Caíque Bom Sucesso
Caique Bom Sucesso is a famous fisher boat in which a group of fishermen crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the early 19th century to tell the king that the French invaders were defeated. As a reward Olhão was made administratively independent of Faro.
Today you can visit a replica of the famous boat in the harbour just behind the Olhão market halls.
12. Go for a Stroll Through the Old Town
Take a leisurely stroll and uncover the charm of Olhão old town. The narrow streets, whitewashed buildings with blue accents, and vibrant flowers climbing the walls create a picturesque scene straight out of a postcard.
The best way to experience the town’s character is to wander aimlessly, you never know what hidden gems you might find along the way.
13. Visit the Olhão Street Art Gallery
While I’ve already mentioned the marina’s street art, Olhão has another gem: the Olhão Street Art Gallery. This abandoned building on Av. D. João VI, near Bairro dos Pescadores, is a canvas for incredible art on all sides.
Be sure to walk around the building to admire every angle of the vibrant murals. I stumbled upon it while passing by in an Uber and had to return for a closer look, it’s that striking.
14. Wander around the Bairro dos Pescadores
The Bairro dos Pescadores is the former Fishermen’s Quarter in Olhão. It’s a very old district in which you can see the unique architecture of the region.
All the buildings are one-story with flat roofs, and steps by the entrance lead up to the roof. Women used to climb up to watch the ocean and spot the fishermen’s boats. Nowadays those steps make up the unique architecture of this neighbourhood.
15. Take a Day Trip
Olhão is perfectly located for day trips along the Algarve coast, thanks to the direct train route connecting Lagos in the west to Vila Real de Santo António in the east. While most trains run directly, double-check schedules, as some routes may require a transfer in Faro.
Tickets can be purchased at the station or online on the official Portuguese railway website.
Here are some top day trip options:
- Fuseta: A small, traditional Portuguese town with two beaches, one facing the lagoon and one on an island facing the ocean.
- Faro: The Algarve’s capital, offering a mix of historic charm in Faro’s old town and modern attractions, including a marina, parks, plazas, and a long stretched beach on an island.
- Tavira: A picturesque town in the eastern Algarve known for its castle walls, Roman bridge, and relaxing beaches.
- Lagos: Famous for its stunning limestone cliffs and breathtaking coastal scenery. While possible as a day trip, spending two days here is ideal to fully explore.
- Albufeira: A popular but in my opinion overrated choice. Known for its party scene and British tourists, it’s best suited for partygoers and families.

The highlight of the Pure Formosa Concept Hotel is without a doubt the stunning rooftop pool with a view of the ocean. The rooms also have everything you need and look very bright and welcoming.
Casa Rosa Villa with Pool in Olhao Centre
Casa Rosa Villa with Pool in Olhao Centre is another great option with a pool in the inner courtyard. This hotel is a bit smaller and has a more traditional look to it.
If you don’t need a pool GuestMar is a great option. This small hotel in a renovated building has excellent reviews and is in a great central location.
