9 Absolute Best Things to Do in Weston Super Mare
Weston Super Mare is a seaside town located on the coast of Somerset, England. Known for its sandy beaches, lively atmosphere and diverse range of fun activities, it’s no wonder that Weston Super Mare is a popular seaside destination.
I visited Weston Super Mare on a day trip from Bristol. Since the weather wasn’t perfect for relaxing on the beach all day, I discovered some other cool activities.
In this guide, I’ll share my top picks for the best things to do in Weston Super Mare.
1. Relax on the Beach
Of course, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a seaside town is spending time on the beach. Weston Super Mare has a long stretch of sandy beach perfect for sunbathing, building sandcastles or taking a refreshing dip in the sea.
When I visited in spring, I was really surprised by the changing of the tides, when I arrived the ocean was far past the pier, barely visible, but just a few hours later, the water had come much closer to the promenade!
One thing I didn’t like about the Weston Super Mare Beach is that they bring donkeys in a truck to the beach so kids can ride them. I just felt bad for the donkeys.
2. Try Out Some Water Sports
If you’re feeling more adventurous, Weston Super Mare offers a variety of water sports activities such as windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding. You can rent equipment from various shops along the beach.
There’s a small pathway separating the ocean from the so-called Marine Lake. The lake is a perfect setting for safe swimming and enjoying water activities away from the stronger currents of the main beach.
3. Play Games in the Arcade
One of the best things to do in Weston Super Mare in the rain is playing games in the arcades. There are multiple gaming arcades all over town but the most popular one is the one on the Grand Pier.
You have to pay Ā£1 entrance fee and on the pier you can find classic arcade games, slot machines and even a small amusement park.
I suggest setting a spending limit for the arcade to avoid an expensive day in Weston Super Mare.
If you love historic piers, I recommend checked out the pier in Blackpool, in the North of England. When you walk down this pier it feels like you stepped back in time.
4. Visit the Abandoned Pier
Have you ever wondered what happens to a pier if it’s not maintained? You can find out in Weston Super Mare!
The Birnbeck Pier was closed in 1994 and has been left abandoned ever since. While entry is prohibited for safety, just having a look at the pier from the mainland is one of the most unusual things to do in Weston Super Mare. It looked like right out of a zombie movie!
Just walking to the pier is a nice experience itself, with a lovely pathway right at the coast with scenic views of the ocean.
5. Have a Cup of Tea in Grove Park
Grove Park is the most beautiful park in Weston Super Mare and I was pleasantly surprised to find a super cute vegan cafƩ inside the park!
So, sit down in the outside area of Sprout cafƩ, have a cup of tea and a snack and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the park.
Afterwards, wander around the park and don’t miss Jill’s Garden, a tranquil area with benches and flowers dedicated to the late Jill Dando, a local TV presenter.
6. Stroll Through High Street
Weston Super Mare’s High Street is perfect for shopping and people watching. You can find a mix of high street brands and independent shops, as well as cafes and restaurants.
At the end of High Street you can also find the modern art piece “The Spire”, the most unique bus stop in Weston Super Mare.
At the other end of High Street is the Italian Garden, a public square. Many festivals and events are held on this square and it’s a popular place to have a seat and drink a coffee.
7. Keep Your Eyes Open for Street Art
I love street art and everywhere I go I always keep my eyes open for it, and in Weston Super Mare this really paid off. I saw quite a few cool pieces of street art all over town.
My favorite pieces were the Japanese inspired piece on Regent Street and the artistic portraits in Old Post Office Lane.
I’m sure you can find your favorite piece somewhere if you just keep your eyes open.
8. Explore Steep Holm Island
Steep Holm Island is a small island located just off the coast of Weston Super Mare. It’s uninhabited but offers stunning views and plenty of wildlife to see.
You can only visit the island with a guided tour run for the Trust by Bay Island Voyages in the summer months when the weather conditions are good.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit Steep Holm Island since there were no tours available for that day.
Make sure to book your tour to Steep Holm Island early enough as the tickets can sell out fast especially on the weekends.
9. Do a Trip to Cheddar Gorge
If you have some extra time, Cheddar Gorge makes for a great day trip from Weston Super Mare. It’s a limestone gorge located in the Mendip Hills, about 13 miles from Weston Super Mare.
You can explore the stunning caves and hike up to the viewpoint for breathtaking views.
There are also many outdoor activities such as rock climbing available.
Final Thoughts: Places to Go in Weston Super Mare
Weston Super Mare makes for a great day trip from Bristol or a weekend getaway at the beach.
Whether you’re soaking up the sun on the sandy beach, exploring the eerie abandoned Birnbeck Pier, or enjoying a cup of tea in Grove Park, Weston Super Mare is brimming with unique experiences waiting to be discovered.
