17 Best Things to Do in Zaragoza Spain
Zaragoza, also known as Saragossa in English, is one of Spain’s top five largest cities. Its strategic location halfway between Barcelona and Madrid makes it an ideal day trip destination from either city.
I took a day trip from Barcelona to Zaragoza during which I explored the top things to do in Zaragoza Spain, from admiring the city’s two cathedrals to exploring the historic Aljafería Palace.
During my visit, I also realized how strong the siesta culture in Zaragoza is. Most attractions close for two to three hours in the afternoon, so keep that in mind when planning your time in the city.
Best Things to Do in Zaragoza Spain
1. Admire the Basilica del Pilar
The Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar is the most iconic landmark in Zaragoza and a must-visit attraction. This grand Baroque-style church sits on the banks of the Ebro River and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Seeing this impressive cathedral on the banks of the River Ebro was definitely the highlight of my Zaragoza day trip from Barcelona.
Online I read that you can climb one of the cathedral towers, unfortunately, this wasn’t possible when I visited.

2. Cross the Stone Bridge of Zaragoza
The Stone Bridge, also known as Puente de Piedra, is another popular attraction in Zaragoza and a great spot for taking photos. This beautiful bridge spans across the Ebro River and offers stunning views of the Basilica del Pilar.
At sunset in summer you can get amazing pictures from the vantage point across the river. In spring as it turns out the views are still impressive but not as picturesque, as you can see in my picture it rained the days before my visit that’s why the water is so brown.

3. Find Statues at Plaza del Pilar
Plaza del Pilar is the main square in Zaragoza and it’s also where you’ll find the Basilica del Pilar. This large open space is a great spot to relax, people-watch, and take in the beautiful architecture of surrounding buildings.
The square is also home to some very cool statues, like the Goya monument which pays tribute to the famous Spanish painter, Francisco Goya. The unique fountain, Fuente de la Hispanidad, symbolizes Latin America’s geography and is quite a sight as well.

4. See the Cathedral La Seo
Zaragoza doesn’t just have one cathedral, but two! La Seo Cathedral, or Cathedral of the Savior, is located just around the corner of the El Pilar Cathedral.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a unique blend of different architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Mudéjar.
Parts of the tower are still remnants of the original mosque that stood on this site before the cathedral was built.

5. Walk Underneath the Arco del Deán
Located next to the Cathedral La Seo, Arco del Deán is a beautiful archway that dates back to the 16th century.
The arch wouldn’t be worth going out of your way to see it but since it’s just next to the cathedral it’s worth having a quick look.
6. Visit Sala de Exposiciones La Lonja
Sala de Exposiciones La Lonja, or the Exchange Market, is a stunning 16th-century building with beautiful Renaissance architecture.
This former trading post now hosts various art exhibitions and events throughout the year. Even if you’re not interested in the exhibitions, it’s worth visiting just to admire the intricate details of the building’s facade.
7. Enter the Aljafería Palace
Located a bit further out from the city center, Aljafería Palace is a must-visit in Zaragoza. This 11th-century Islamic palace was later taken over by Christian rulers and now serves as the seat of the regional parliament in Aragon.
During your visit, you can visit both the historic palace and the modern-day parliament rooms, giving you a unique insight into the city’s history and current political landscape.
The historic, Moorish part of the palace reminded me of the Alhambra in Granada but the parliament rooms were a completely new experience for me in Spain.
8. Take a Stroll in Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta
Zaragoza has several beautiful parks, but the most popular one is Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta. This park is perfect for taking a leisurely stroll, having a picnic, or just relaxing under the shade of the trees.
Don’t miss out on walking down Paseo de San Sebastián, a picturesque promenade inside the park lined with fountains and sculptures.
9. Kayak on the Ebro River
For a different and more active way to see the city, consider taking a kayak tour and paddling along the Ebro River.
This activity is especially popular during summer as it offers a unique perspective of the city’s architecture and sights.
In colder months just opt for strolling next to the Ebro River to take in the city.

10. Discover the Roman History of Zaragoza
Zaragoza has a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire. You can explore this part of the city’s past by visiting sites like the Roman Theatre Museum, the remnants of Roman walls and gates, and the Forum Museum, the Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta.
These sites offer a deeper understanding of the city’s origins and how it has evolved over time. But they are by far not the only museums Zaragoza has to offer.
Tip: If you want to see more Roman history in Spain, I highly recommend visiting Tarragona.

11. Visit a Museum or Two
Zaragoza has a variety of museums to suit different interests, from history and art to science and music.
Popular museums are the Goya Museum for works of the painter Francisco de Goya, Museo Pablo Gargallo for sculptures of the Spanish artist Gargallo, the IAACC Pablo Serrano, which showcases contemporary art, and the Tapestry Museum which is located in the Cathedral of the Savior.
A hidden gem among the museums is the Escuela Museo de Origami Zaragoza (EMOZ) where you can learn about and create your own origami art. It’s one of the cool and unique things to do in Zaragoza Spain.
Good to know: Most museums and attractions close for a few hours in the afternoon for a siesta.
12. Cross the Pabellón Puente
The Pabellón Puente, or Bridge Pavilion, is a unique structure that was built for the 2008 International Expo with the theme of “Water and Sustainable Development.”
This architectural marvel serves as both a pedestrian bridge and a museum showcasing transportation technology innovations.
You can see some interesting exhibition pieces about modern transportation on the bridge, making it one of the best free things to do in Zaragoza.
The whole bridge reminded me of the futuristic city of arts and science in Valencia.

13. Eat Some Vegan Food
Zaragoza may not be known for its vegetarian or vegan food scene, and it can’t compare with the vegan options in Barcelona or Madrid, but you can still find some delicious vegan food in Zaragoza.
The best vegan restaurant in Zaragoza for very affordable, traditional dishes is La Piparra. Unfortunately, it was closed during my visit, so I went to A Flama Madalena instead, which is a great option if you’re in the mood for vegan fast food.
14. Look for Street Art
Zaragoza has a lively street art scene, with murals and graffiti decorating many walls throughout the city.
You can find some incredible pieces just by walking around the streets, so keep your eyes open and your camera ready.
If you want to see a concentration of street art in one place, head to the La Jota neighborhood where there’s even an annual street art festival.
Tip: If you’re a street art fan, don’t miss Valencia’s incredible street art scene!
15. Stroll Down C. de Alfonso I
Calle de Alfonso I is one of the main pedestrian streets in Zaragoza, lined with shops, restaurants, and cafés. Take a leisurely stroll down this street to soak up the city’s atmosphere and stop for a coffee along the way.
This street also leads you to Plaza del Pilar, so it’s a great way to get there while taking in some of the city’s charm.
If you visit during the winter, be sure to check out the beautiful Christmas lights that adorn this street.
16. Shop at the Central Market
For a taste of local life, head to the Central Market where you can find fresh produce and other goods sold by local vendors.
This bustling market is a great place to buy some ingredients for a picnic or try some traditional Spanish snacks like churros or empanadas.
17. Relax at Plaza de los Sitios
Take a break from sightseeing and relax at Plaza de los Sitios, a charming square with a central fountain, surrounded by trees.
Grab a bench or sit on the grass and enjoy some people-watching in this peaceful spot. It’s a very nice square if you’re in the area but it’s not worth going out of your way to get there.
This is also where you can find the Zaragoza Museum, a great place to learn more about the city’s history and culture. Unfortunately, the museum was closed for reconstruction during my visit.
Final Thoughts: What to Do in Zaragoza
Zaragoza may not have the same level of fame as other Spanish cities like Madrid or Barcelona, but it definitely has its own unique charm and Zaragoza is worth visiting.
Whether you’re interested in art, and history, or just want to soak up the authentic Spanish atmosphere, Zaragoza offers plenty of things to see and do.
From stunning architecture and museums to delicious food and a lively street art scene, there’s something for everyone in this underrated city.
And remember, always leave some room for spontaneity and unexpected discoveries – you never know what hidden gem you might stumble upon while exploring this beautiful city.
