I spent over a week exploring Lisbon, wandering its hilltop viewpoints, getting lost in Alfama’s maze-like streets, and eating way too many vegan pastéis de nata. But I know not everyone has that kind of time.

That’s why I created this packed one-day itinerary: to help you see Lisbon’s must-visit spots in a short amount of time, without feeling like you’re missing out. It’s fast-paced, yes, but totally doable. If you’ve only got a day, this guide will help you make the most of it.

And if you can stretch your trip to two days? Even better. You’ll have time to linger longer at your favorite stops or discover a few hidden corners of the city.

Morning: Explore the Historic Belém District

Start your Lisbon day in Belém, a charming riverside neighborhood just west of the city center. You can easily get there by tram or bus, plan to arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful morning light over the river.

Belém Tower

This 16th-century tower once guarded the entrance to Lisbon’s harbor and is now one of the Portugal’s most iconic landmarks. The detailed Manueline architecture is unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere, full of intricate carvings.

My Tip: If you’re short on time, skip the interior. The line is usually long, and the best part is the view from outside anyway.

Jerónimos Monastery

Just a short walk away, the Jerónimos Monastery is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and just as beautiful. Inside, the peaceful cloisters and elaborate stonework are worth a visit.

Don’t miss Vasco da Gama’s tomb inside. He set sail for India just steps away from where the monastery now stands, making this not just a beautiful stop but a deeply historic one too.

Afternoon: Get Lost in Alfama’s Winding Streets

After exploring Belém, head back toward the heart of Lisbon and dive into its oldest neighborhood: Alfama. This area feels like stepping into another time with cobblestone streets, tiled facades, and tiny balconies strung with laundry.

Alfama is home to two of Lisbon’s most important attractions. You’ll pass the Se Cathedral, the city’s oldest church, and make your way up to Castelo de São Jorge, the historic castle that overlooks the city.

Inside the castle, you’ll find ruins of the old royal palace, scenic gardens, and some of the best views in Lisbon.

Time-Saver Tip: Buy your ticket to the castle online as soon as you get there (or even while walking up). I skipped a long line at the entrance just by buying it on the spot via mobile.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

One of my favorite spots in Lisbon is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, a terrace overlooking the city’s red rooftops and the Tagus River. It’s framed by tiled walls and flowering vines, and feels like something from a postcard.

If you have time, just sit here for a while. It’s a perfect break in your busy day, and the view is honestly unforgettable.

Evening: Baixa & the Waterfront

As the sun begins to set, make your way down to Baixa, one of the most popular areas in Lisbon to spend the night. This area is flat, lively, and full of elegant architecture, a great contrast to Alfama’s hilly maze.

Rua Augusta & Arco da Rua Augusta

Stroll down Rua Augusta, a wide pedestrian street lined with shops, cafés, and street performers. At the end, you’ll find the Arco da Rua Augusta, a triumphal arch that marks the entrance to Praça do Comércio, one of Lisbon’s biggest squares.

You can climb to the top of the arch for panoramic views of the river and city center, it’s especially beautiful at sunset.

Dinner at Kong (Vegan Portuguese Food)

Just a short walk from Arco da Rua Augusta, you’ll find Kong, one of my favorite vegan restaurants in Lisbon. It’s the perfect spot to end your day, especially if you want to try vegan versions of traditional Portuguese dishes.

The setting is cozy and the food is delicious. I loved the vegan “fish” with rice and salad, and my partner’s Francesinha (a layered sandwich with tomato sauce and cheese) was spot on. Don’t skip dessert, the Snickers cake was ridiculously good.

Walk Along the Waterfront

End your day with a relaxing stroll along the Tagus River, taking in the sunset views and the beauty of Lisbon!

Find yourself a comfortable bar, sit back, and enjoy the moment with a refreshing drink in hand as you think about when to come back to this amazing city so you can explore more of it 😉

Final Thoughts: Is One Day in Lisbon Enough?

You can definitely see a lot in Lisbon in a day, as this itinerary shows, but I think Lisbon deserves a bit more time. With its hilly streets, beautiful viewpoints, cool streetart, and interesting history, there’s just so much to take in.

If you can, I highly recommend spending at least three days here. With a bit more time, you can enjoy each neighborhood at a slower pace, discover hidden corners, and even take a day trip to nearby places like Sintra or Cascais.
