In one day in Lisbon Portugal, you can see the best attractions of the city, you can walk the walls of Castelo de São Jorge, get lost in the narrow streets of Alfama, see the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Belém and taste some delicious Portuguese treats.
Having visited Lisbon multiple times, including a week-long stay, I have had the opportunity to explore this amazing city. This extensive experience has allowed me to create this amazing list of what to see in Lisbon in one day.
Lisbon 1 Day Itinerary
Morning: Belem Neighborhood
We’ll start our 1 day Lisbon itinerary in the Belém District, an area steeped in historical charm located just west of central Lisbon. You can get there by tram or bus.
Belém Tower
The first stop is Belém Tower, a fortress that has stood at the shoreline of the Tagus River since the 16th century. Belém Tower is a stunning embodiment of Manueline architecture, a Portuguese variant of late Gothic.
The tower’s intricate stonework is just stunning. It’s like no other tower I’ve ever seen.
Personal Tip: if you’re in Lisbon just for one day, I’d recommend going inside the tower. The queues are usually very long and, to be honest, the outside of the tower is the best part anyway.

Jerónimos Monastery
The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, or Jerónimos Monastery, is another one of Lisbon’s must-visit landmarks in the Belém District. It’s located within a short walking distance to the Belém Tower.
This stunning monastery also showcases the beauty and intricacy of the Manueline architectural style. As you step inside, you’ll be amazed by the intricate sculptural details and the grandeur of its cloisters.
Inside you can also find Vasco da Gama’s tomb. He was the first person to reach India by sea and he set sail just a short way away from the monastery.

Afternoon: Alfama Neighborhood
The Alfama district is truly the heart and soul of Lisbon. Its cobblestone streets and quaint, historic houses are what Lisbon is known for and what you can find on most postcards from Lisbon.
Every corner you turn reveals a new sight, from hidden courtyards, and historical churches, to beautifully painted tiles that Portugal is famous for.
This district is also home to the Se Cathedral and the Castelo de São Jorge, landmarks that are a testament to the city’s rich history.
Wander around Alfama and look for the best viewpoint
As you wander the labyrinthine streets of Alfama, you’ll stumble upon some incredible viewpoints or ‘miradouros’. These spots offer panoramic views over the terracotta rooftops, the Tagus River, and the city beyond.
My favorite viewpoint is the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. It’s a terrace with traditional blue Azulejo tiles and pillars overgrown by plants. There you can enjoy the stunning view of the beautiful city and the harbor.

Castelo de São Jorge
One of the best things to do in Lisbon is to visit the Castelo de São Jorge or St. George’s Castle. It’s a historic and cultural landmark of Portugal.
Inside you’ll find a museum, ruins of the former royal palace, and stunning views from its towers.
Top Tip: Buy your ticket online to skip the long lines in front of the ticket office. When I visited the queue was massive, I simply bought the ticket on the spot online and was able to walk past all the people in the queue.

Evening: Area around R. Augusta
Arco da Rua Augusta
As the day winds down, make your way to the vibrant and bustling Rua Augusta in the Baixa district. This pedestrianized street is framed by the majestic Arco da Rua Augusta, a triumphal archway that’s a spectacle in itself.
Here, you’ll find plenty of shops, cafés, and even vegan restaurants.
Be sure to delve into the local cuisine and try a vegan take on the traditional Portuguese pastry, Pastel de Nata sometimes also called Pastéis de Nata or Pastel de Belém. This delicious custard dessert is a must-try for all visitors.

Santa Justa Lift
Near the Rua Augusta, you can also find the iconic Santa Justa Lift. This unique iron structure is another one of the main attractions in Lisbon. At the top, there’s a great viewing platform, from which you have an amazing view of the city, the castle, and the waterfront.
Tip: I don’t recommend to actually use the lift. It’s just a short walk up a steep hill to the top of the elevator. And walking will save you the long wait at the entrance to the elevator.
Waterfront
End your day with a relaxing stroll along the waterfront, taking in the serene sunset views and the beauty of Lisbon!
Find yourself a comfortable bar, sit back, and savor the moment with a refreshing drink in hand as you reflect on the incredible experiences that filled your day.
Is One Day in Lisbon Portugal Enough?
While it’s possible to cover the top sights of Lisbon in a single day, as this 1 day in Lisbon itinerary shows, I believe that two days are ideal to fully appreciate the beauty of this city.
With two days in Lisbon, you can explore at a more relaxed pace, delving deeper into the city’s rich history, unique architecture, and vibrant culture.
You’ll have more time to get lost in the charming streets of the Alfama district, taste a variety of traditional Portuguese dishes, and perhaps even experience Lisbon’s renowned nightlife.
The advantage of spending even more days in Lisbon is that you have time for some amazing day trips if you spend at least three days in Lisbon.
However, regardless of how long you stay in Lisbon, this amazing city will steal your heart with its laid-back charm, stunning old town, and captivating views.
