How Many Days In Madrid Are Enough For A Visit?
Are you planning your first visit to Spain’s capital and you’re asking yourself how many days in Madrid is enough? I’ve got you covered!
If you’re planning a trip to Madrid, one of the most common questions is: how many days do I need to spend there? The answer isn’t always clear-cut, as it depends on your travel style and interests.
But I can tell you one thing right now, I recently spent 7 days in Madrid and it was too much.
I’ve visited numerous Spanish cities for multiple days and almost always I had the feeling of not wanting to leave because there’s more to discover. Not so in Madrid, after just a few days I didn’t know what else to do.
How many days in Madrid are enough?
I personally think one or two days are enough time in Madrid. You can see the main sights of the city in one day, in two days if you want to spend more time at the museums. On the second day, I would already recommend a day trip from Madrid to Toledo.
However, I did a lot of research and stayed in Madrid for a week myself, so I put together a rough outline of what you can do in the capital of Spain depending on how many days you stay in the city.
One Day in Madrid
If you only have one day, focus on Madrid’s iconic landmarks. Start with the Prado Museum, home to masterpieces from renowned artists. Then, head over to the Retiro Park for a picnic lunch or a boat ride on the lake.
Spend your afternoon exploring the Royal Palace of Madrid and Almudena Cathedral. In the evening, savour traditional Spanish dishes in a local restaurant and experience the city’s vibrant nightlife.
The important thing if you only spend one day in Madrid is to book your entrance tickets in advance, so you don’t have to waste your limited time queuing up. The Prado Museum and the Royal Palace are the most visited sights with long queues.
Don’t forget to go for some delicious vegan brunch while you’re in Madrid! My favorite breakfast place in all of Spain is in Madrid.

Two Days in Madrid
With two days, you can delve deeper into Madrid’s rich history and culture, as well as embark on a half-day trip to Toledo.
On your second day, explore Madrid’s vibrant neighborhoods such as Malasaรฑa or La Latina. In case your second day is a Sunday, wander around the El Rastro Flea Market for unique finds.
In the afternoon, catch a train to Toledo and explore this impressive medieval town. I recommend booking your train ticket in advance as they can sell out.
In the evening, catch a flamenco show for a taste of traditional Spanish dance or visit one of the rooftop bars for stunning city views.
Three Days in Madrid
With three days at your disposal, you can fully immerse yourself in the diverse experiences Madrid and its surroundings have to offer.
On your third day, you can visit more of Madrid’s best museums, like the Thyssen-Bornemisza or Reina Sofia Museum. Alternatively, take more day trips to surrounding cities like Segovia or Aranjuez.
You can also do a full-day trip to Toledo and Segovia on your third day if you want to visit some of the museums on the second day.
What to do in Madrid?
Have you ever been to a city where you think, it’s probably nice to live here but there aren’t many things to do as a tourist?
That’s how I feel about Madrid. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great things to do just not as many as I would have expected from the Spanish capital.
But now let’s have a look at the city’s top attractions:
- Royal Palace: The Royal Palace in Madrid is one of the biggest palaces in the world. It’s the official residence of the Spanish royal family. However, now the royal family lives elsewhere and the palace is only for state ceremonies. The palace is open to visitors. I recommend buying the tickets online, otherwise, you might need to queue up for a long time.
- Madrid Cathedral: Located just opposite the palace, the Catedral de la Almudena is equally captivating. With its combination of Gothic, Romanesque, and Neoclassical styles, the cathedral is not just a place of worship, but also a testament to Madrid’s architectural diversity.
- Retiro Park: A green oasis in the heart of the city, Retiro Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, a boat ride on the lake, or just basking in the Spanish sun.
- Museo Nacional del Prado: Home to one of the finest collections of European art, this world-class art museum is an absolute must-visit for art lovers. From Goya to Velรกzquez to El Greco, the museum houses masterpieces from some of the greatest artists in history. You can easily spend multiple hours exploring the museum.
- Puerta del Sol: Known as the heart of Madrid, this bustling square is a hub of activity at all hours, and you’ll find a mix of shopping, dining, and landmarks like the famous Bear and the Strawberry Tree statue.
In general, Madrid is one of the best cities to live in Spain. So, try to take in the atmosphere of the city and not just the tourist attractions.

Is Madrid worth visiting?
The question of whether Madrid is worth visiting largely depends on individual preferences and interests.
Personally, I feel that if you’re landing at Madrid airport, the city is definitely worth a day or two of exploration. The city offers a blend of iconic landmarks, beautiful parks, and lively nightlife which makes for a great starting point for your Spain itinerary.
However, if Madrid isn’t on your direct route, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going out of your way to fit it into your travel plans.
It’s a delightful large city, no doubt, but whether it’s worth the extra air miles is a decision best made based on your travel style, interests, and timeframe. Read the full article, if Madrid is worth visiting.
Day trips from Madrid
One reason for spending a couple of days in Madrid is the day trip opportunities. Once you explored everything in Spain’s capital you can set out on a day trip. The best thing is that most of these day trips can be done by public transportation.
The most popular day trips from Madrid are:
- Toledo: Known as the “City of Three Cultures,” Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Christian, Muslim, and Jewish cultures have coexisted for centuries. You can traverse its narrow, winding streets, visit the Cathedral, and explore the Alcรกzar fortress for a taste of its rich heritage on a day trip from Madrid to Toledo.
- Segovia: Segovia is home to a stunning Roman aqueduct, a fairy-tale Alcรกzar castle, and the picturesque Segovia Cathedral. You can also combine a day trip to Segovia and Toledo on a tour.
- El Escorial: The historical residence of the King of Spain, El Escorial, is located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This grand monastery and royal palace complex is a testament to Spanish Renaissance architecture. It houses a rich collection of art, a vast library, and the pantheon of the Kings of Spain.
- Aranjuez: Famous for the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, this city is also known for its scenic gardens and the historic Falรบas Museum, where you can see the leisure boats used by the royal family.
- Avila: Enclosed by impressive medieval walls, Avila is a place of mystic history. Visit the Avila Cathedral and the Convent of St. Teresa and soak in the spiritual ambiance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Final thoughts: How many days do I need in Madrid?
If you’re asking yourself: how many days for Madrid do I need? there’s no perfect amount of time, the ideal duration depends on your preferences.
However, in my opinion, one or two days are sufficient to explore the city’s major attractions. I recommend adding a stop to Madrid to your Spain itinerary, and not only visiting Madrid.
