Sustainable Day Trip From Sydney to Blue Mountains

A scenic 2-hour drive from the city of Sydney, you’ll find yourself in one of Australia’s most magical National Parks. Welcome to the Blue Mountains, an Australian natural treasure.

A day trip from Sydney to Blue Mountains is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the Australian bushland. And the best part is, you don’t have to travel very far at all.

My friend Luca lived in the Blue Mountains for 17 years. She is now a full-time traveller and the writer of the youth travel blog “Hello World, Here I Come“. Luca has shared all of her expert knowledge with me for this post, and with 17 years under her belt, it’s fair to say she knows her stuff!

Day Trip from Sydney to Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are widely renowned as one of the most picturesque places in New South Wales, Australia. As a UNESCO World Heritage area, and Australia’s most visited National Park (with 6.4 MILLION visitors annually), its beauty hasn’t gone unnoticed.

With magical bushland and rainforest, cascading waterfalls, and small mountain villages, a visit to the Blue Mountains is an experience to remember.

And being only 2 hours from Sydney it is accessible as well, making it an ideal day trip from Sydney.

PS: Are you planning a stay in the Blue Mountains? Luca’s guide “Are the Blue Mountains worth visiting?” gives information on cost, where to stay and a few extra to-do’s if you choose to stay for longer than a day.

How to Get to the Blue Mountains from Sydney

In short, there are three main ways to get to the Blue Mountains from Sydney. Driving, public transport, and a guided tour.

Each option has its pros and cons, so here is an in-depth guide to each mode of transport so you can find out which one is better for you.

From Sydney to Blue Mountains by Car

Driving is the most common option for a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Having access to a car makes it easier to customize your itinerary and visit everywhere you want to go in the span of a day.

The drive from Sydney takes roughly 2 hours (similar to public transport) and follows the Blue Mountains major highway. As there is only one highway going up and down the Mountains. Therefore, be prepared for the road to become very congested on weekends, school holidays, and public holidays.

This is the reason that Luca recommends public transport over driving in busy seasons. During busy days, it is not uncommon to be stuck in traffic for up to 4 hours. Not only is it frustrating for visitors, but it makes it very difficult for locals to go about their daily lives.

From Sydney to Blue Mountains by Tour

As an advocate for sustainable travel in the Blue Mountains, Luca highly recommends NOT to use a private tour.

Although tours are convenient, their practices also do a great deal of damage to the Mountainโ€™s environment, wildlife, and local communities. Luca recommends avoiding all tours that are not run by local residents or companies.

โ›ฐ The most sustainable way to get to the Blue Mountains is by train.
There you can get around with a hop-on/hop-off bus!

From Sydney to Blue Mountains by Train

The Blue Mountains has one train line running from Sydney station all the way to Lithgow. And it is undoubtedly one of the stateโ€™s most scenic train rides.

The Blue Mountains line will take you through all of the Mountain’s major villages and give you several panoramic views of the National Park.

Details about the train to Blue Mountains

Trains depart for the Blue Mountains from Sydney Central Station roughly once per hour. The train takes an average of 2 hours to the Mountain’s largest town, Katoomba.

The average cost of a one-way ticket from Sydney Central to Katoomba is $7-$10 AUD, but prices can vary. You can find the timetable at the official NSW Transport site.

Luca recommended catching the train, as it is considered to be the most sustainable option when traveling to the Blue Mountains. However, it is important to note that as there is only one train line going up and down the Mountains, it canโ€™t take you everywhere.

The National Park itself is very spread out, but the train takes you to most towns and gives you access to many popular walking trails.

However, if you are looking to adventure deeper into the Park, you may find it difficult without access to a car. It is also important to note that the Blue Mountains do not have Uber and taxis can be quite expensive.

That being said, hop-on/hop-off buses are a very viable way to experience the National Park while sticking to public transport. And you can see a lot of what the Blue Mountains have to offer!

Sustainable Travel in the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are a natural wonder, and 6.4 million people flood the National Park every year to soak in its atmosphere. Although mass tourism helps keep the Mountains” economy afloat, it has also done irreversible damage to the natural landscape.

As a traveler herself, Luca does not advocate for avoiding the Mountains altogether. However, she is incredibly passionate about sustainable travel in the region.

Her article titled “6 ways to visit the Blue Mountains sustainably“, gives insight sourced from the local community on how to visit the Blue Mountains more consciously and ethically. And is a very useful resource for those who want to play their part in preserving the National Park.

Blue Mountains Day Trip Itinerary

So, what is the perfect Blue Mountains day trip itinerary? After 17 years of exploring the Blue Mountains, Luca has compiled one of the best Mountains itineraries that allows you to experience every side of the beautiful National Park.

1. Head to Pomegranate Cafe

Your first stop is Katoomba, where youโ€™ll make your way to the Pomegranate cafe, just 100 meters from the station. The cafe is popular among locals and visitors alike, with a homely and vibrant atmosphere.

It’s a great first stop if you haven’t had breakfast in Sydney yet.

Pomegranate serves up a wide range of food including plenty of vegan options. And a variety of coffees with different milk options. Make sure to fill up, as thereโ€™s a big day of exploring to come!

2. Buy a Hop-on/ Hop-off Bus Ticket (If you don’t have a car)

For those who donโ€™t have a car, a hop-on/hop-off bus ticket is the best and cheapest way to reach each of the places in the itinerary. Tickets can be purchased right in front of the Katoomba station exit, and itโ€™s hard to miss!

๐Ÿคฉ This hop-on/hop-off bus is a great way to get around the Blue Mountains!

Three Sisters from Echo Point

3. Make Your Way to Echo Point

One of the first stops on the Hop-on/ Hop-off bus is Echo Point, the most famous lookout in the Blue Mountains. Though extremely busy, Echo Point offers the best view of the Three Sisters (pictured above).

Echo Point also has some peaceful and easily accessible walking trails where you can escape some of the crowds and get nicer views of the beautiful rock formations. And down a few flights of steep steps you can make your way all the way down to their base (although access to the rocks themselves is prohibited).

It is important to note that it is not recommended to try and access Echo Point by car, as finding parking can be extremely difficult. Luca recommends taking the 20-minute walk from Katoombaโ€™s Main Street instead.

4. Bushwalk and Swim at the Pool of Siloam

Stop 22 of the hop-on/ hop-off bus will take you straight to the trailhead leading down to one of the best swimming spots in the Blue Mountains.

The shortest walk to the Pool of Siloam (which is a 900m return) starts at the Gordon Falls Picnic Area, which is easily accessible by car as well as bus.

The pool of Siloam offers a peaceful break, you can either relax in the forest, set up a picnic, or swim in the natural waterhole. Take the opportunity to Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Australian rainforest.

5. Explore Local Businesses

From Leura, catch the train three stops up the Mountain to the beautiful little town of Blackheath. As well as beautiful lookouts (which youโ€™ll see later in the day), Blackheath has a number of antique stores, artisans, and other small local businesses to explore.

In Colliers Arcade on Main Street, you find Gleebooks. A charming bookshop featuring a large kids’ section and plenty of Australian authors.

Just across you can find Hat Hill Records & Audio, selling everything vinyl. A few meters higher is the beautiful Blackheath Crystal Shop, with thousands of crystals, locally made jewelry, and keepsakes.

Sunset at the Blue Mountains in Australia, the sun sets behind some trees

6. Watch the sunset at Evans Lookout

And finally, in the evening, make your way to Evans Lookout for sunset. The Blue Mountains have some of Australiaโ€™s best sunsets, and Evans Lookout is the perfect place to relax and watch the colors paint the sky.

Though Evans Lookout is best accessible by car, it is also possible to grab a taxi from Main Street. Often you find them lining the street outside the Ivanhoe Inn, but otherwise, Katoomba Taxis offers the Mountainโ€™s most trusted service.

Note: to reach Katoomba Taxiโ€™s, call  +61 2 4782 1311

Is a Day Trip to the Blue Mountains Enough?

Though the Blue Mountains have enough activities to fill 3-4 days, Luca says it is still possible to experience the essence of the Blue Mountains in one day.

With this single-day itinerary, youโ€™ll be able to see all sides of the beautiful National Park. Exploring 3 towns, bushwalking, swimming, and visiting a beautiful lookout. The itinerary avoids popular tourist destinations in order to give you a more authentic experience of mountain life.
