When you only travel with one personal item-sized bag, the right backpack matters a lot. That’s why I tested the Tom Bihn Synapse 25, a minimalist traveler’s favorite. Full disclosure: Tom Bihn sent me this backpack for free, but this review is completely honest.

At first, I had doubts. No laptop compartment? That seemed like a flaw. But after testing, I realized it saves space and weight. What impressed me most was how spacious the main compartment is for a 25L bag.

In this Tom Bihn Synapse 25 review, I’ll break down its pros, cons, and whether it’s the best minimalist travel backpack for you. Let’s find out!

Backpack Compartments

Main Compartment: Surprisingly Spacious

The magenta Tom Bihn Synapse backpack is unzipped, revealing a spacious main compartment lined with bright green fabric. Inside are neatly packed items, including an orange and beige packing cube, a laptop, and a green pouch.

The main compartment of the Tom Bihn Synapse 25L is surprisingly spacious, way more than I expected for a 25L backpack. Other backpacks I’ve tested of the same size, like the Patagonia Black Hole 25L, feel noticeably smaller in comparison.

I’m not a fan of the internal separator. It’s a thin, floppy divider with a loose elastic band that is too loose to keep things in place. If you pack carefully, it’s fine, but if you shove something in, like a jacket, it gets in the way and the jacket gets split between both sides.

Front Compartments: Smart Design With Plenty of Storage

One of the standout features of the Tom Bihn Synapse 25L is its five front compartments, each serving a different purpose:

  • 1) Water Bottle Compartment: Positioned in the center of the bag, this pocket easily fits a 1L bottle while keeping the weight evenly distributed, something I didn’t know I needed until I tried it. The only downside? The bottle takes up some space of the main compartment, but not as much as I expected.
  • 2) Small Front Pocket: Perfectly sized for headphones or other small items, but I wouldn’t store valuables here, it’s too easy to access in crowded places.
  • 3 & 4) Side Pockets (Left & Right): Nearly identical in size, one comes with a keychain, but you can switch it to the other pocket since both have a built-in hook. These are great for sunglasses, a power bank, or other quick-access items while traveling.
  • 5) Bottom Compartment: It’s spacious enough for a spare pair of shoes (my EU 37/US 6 fit easily in a fully packed bag, my boyfriend’s EU 44/US 10 shoes fit if the backpack isn’t fully stuffed). It’s also a great spot for a damp towel or dirty laundry, keeping them separate from the rest of your gear.

Carry Comfort: Lightweight Yet Supportive

The Tom Bihn Synapse 25L is one of the few backpacks in this size that comes with both a sternum strap and an adjustable (and removable) hip belt, a rare feature for a 25L bag.

The hip belt isn’t the most padded or supportive but is lightweight and unobtrusive, making it perfect for city travel. I didn’t realize how much I missed one until using this, it really helps distribute the weight. For extended hikes, though, you’ll want more padding.

The shoulder straps are made of foam that conforms to your shoulders, making them surprisingly comfortable even with a full load.

Pros of the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 Backpack

Cons of the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 Backpack

  • Premium price – High-quality materials and USA production come at a higher cost than similar-sized bags.
  • Shipping taxes – If you live outside the U.S. you’ll have to pay additional shipping taxes.
  • No dedicated laptop compartment – You can add the separate available Cache sleeve.
  • Internal separator in the main compartment is impractical – Can get in the way when quickly shoving items in.
  • Hip belt padding isn’t great for long hikes – But I actually prefer the minimalist design since it doesn’t take up much space.
  • Water bottle pocket takes up space in the main compartment since it’s not an exterior mash pocket, but that’s the trade off for having it central for better weight distribution.

Why I Chose the Tom Bihn Synapse vs Synik

I did a ton of research before deciding on the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 instead of the Synik 26. Here’s what influenced my decision:

  • Weight: The Synapse weighs 1 lb 15.8 oz (900g), while the Synik is 2 lb 11 oz (1240g). It may not sound like a huge difference, but you feel it after carrying it for hours. Keeping my bag under 1kg is a priority for me.
  • Backpack-style opening: The Synik has a clamshell opening, which looks great at first, but I’ve realized I actually prefer a standard backpack opening. It makes grabbing things on the go much easier.
  • Price: The Synik is almost $100 more expensive. Since I received the bag for free, I could have easily picked the more expensive Synik, but after comparing both models, I genuinely believe the Synapse was the better choice for my needs.
  • Laptop compartment: The Synik has a dedicated laptop compartment accessible via an external zipper, which is super convenient. Since I do travel with my laptop, this was tempting, but ultimately, it wasn’t worth the extra weight and cost for me.

In the end, the Synapse 25L felt like the smarter, more minimalist choice, lightweight, functional, and perfect for my travel style.
