When I started traveling with just one carry-on backpack almost 3 years ago, I knew finding the perfect backpack would be tough. It had to fit everything, work for different trips, breeze through airport security, and not break my back on cobblestone streets.

One name kept coming up in conversations with fellow travelers and on backpack Reddit threads: the Osprey Daylite Expandable 26+6L Backpack. It’s super light, expandable (perfect for souvenirs on your way home) and has a suitcase-style opening.

But honestly, what made me buy the backpack in the end was the fact that it comes in multiple colors (finally, something other than plain black, but don’t worry, black is an option too).

The backpack features a suitcase-style (clamshell) opening for easy packing. Inside, the lid has a thin mesh compartment, and the main section includes a laptop sleeve and a small tie-down strap.

At first, I was skeptical about the laptop sleeve being inside the main compartment, but the separate back zipper made accessing it surprisingly easy. Using packing cubes also kept things organized, so pulling out my laptop, even from a fully packed bag, wasn’t an issue.

Water Bottle Pockets

The two mesh side pockets are perfect for storing water bottles. While some reviews mention trouble with oversized bottles, I tested both a 0.5L and a 1L bottle, and both fit securely, even while walking around with the bag.

Front Compartments

The backpack features two front pockets. The top pocket includes a keychain and small mesh organizers, perfect for a wallet, power bank, or small travel essentials. While I don’t use the pen holders, the larger pockets are very handy.

The second front compartment is for simply shoving stuff inside, which in theory is great but in reality this becomes difficult if the backpack is fully packed. It still works well for smaller, thinner items, or a bit bigger items ones if the bag isn’t completely full.

Expandability

It’s super easy to expand

The Osprey isn’t the first expandable bag I’ve tested, but I love that its expansion adds volume directly to the main compartment. Unlike other backpacks I’ve tried, which add an awkward extra compartment, the Osprey’s design is simple and practical whether expanded or not.

Security

The backpack offers some security features for peace of mind while traveling. You can attach a security lock to the zippers of the main compartment, keeping your belongings safe.

Additionally, the laptop compartment’s zipper can be “parked” in a sling for added protection, or you can secure it with a separate lock for extra security.

There’s also a small whistle built into the sternum strap, a handy safety feature to have just in case. I recommend testing it beforehand, it can be a bit tricky to get a loud sound from it.

Carry Comfort

I wouldn’t recommend carrying it as a duffle bag

The Daylite Backpack is reasonably comfortable to carry, though the lightweight design means the padding is minimal. It’s not a backpack you’d want for a long hike, but for traveling it does the job.

There’s also a side handle for easy access when picking it up, but it’s not designed to function as a duffle bag due to its off-center positioning and lack of sufficient padding.
