11 Best Things to Do in Cascais Portugal

Cascais is known as a beautiful beach destination close to Lisbon. But you might ask yourself, what are the best things to do in Cascais Portugal besides relaxing on the beach?

I visited Cascais on a day trip from Lisbon and since the weather wasn’t the best, I had to find other things to do in this coastal town. And I found plenty of amazing things to do in Cascais if you’re in the mood for a bit more than just relaxing.

In Cascais you can marvel at geological formations, visit the western most point of mainland Europe, explore the charming old town and so much more.

Best Things to Do in Cascais Portugal

1. Go for a Stroll on the Promenade

Take the time to explore the picturesque waterfront of Cascais. If you’re arriving from Lisbon, make sure to exit the train at the station just before Cascais. That’s what I did on my half day trip from Lisbon to Cascais and it was amazing.

This gives you an opportunity to begin your visit with a leisurely stroll along the promenade, allowing you to take in the stunning view of the turquoise sea, the palm-fringed walkway, and the charming coastal town as you approach.

Keep your eyes open for street art along the way. I found some very amazing pieces in an underground walkway. It almost seemed like an outside art gallery.

2. Relax on the Beach

Cascais is the perfect place. if you’re looking for some beach time near Lisbon

Cascais’ beaches are the main reasons why people visit this coastal town. Usually they’re vibrant with gleaming sands and crystal clear waters.

Unfortunately this wasn’t the case on the day of my visit. A storm had swept through the area the day before, leaving the beaches not in their usual pristine condition. Despite this, I could clearly see the allure of the beaches on a hot sunny day.

It was a reminder of nature’s power and the ever-changing scenery that the ocean brings, making even a stormy day at the beach a memorable experience. And luckily, I found plenty of other free things to do in Cascais.

3. Be Mesmerised by Boca do Inferno

Boca do Inferno: One of the best Cascais attractions

Translated as “Hell’s Mouth,” Boca do Inferno is a stunning natural rock formation located just a short walk from Cascais’ town center.

This unique geological formation was created by the powerful forces of the sea eroding the cliffs over thousands of years, resulting in an impressive cave and archway.

Facing the Atlantic Ocean, you can feel the full force of nature as the waves crash and spray against the rocks. It’s a breathtaking sight and it was the highlight of my visit.

4. Get Lost in the Winding Streets of Cascais Old Town

One of the best ways to experience the charm and character of Cascais is by getting lost in its winding streets. The old town is full of colorful buildings, charming cafes and shops, and interesting street art.

Make sure to take your time as you wander through the quaint alleyways, soaking up the laid-back atmosphere and admiring the beautiful architecture.

Simply pick the prettiest alleys no matter where they lead. Don’t worry about getting lost, Cascais isn’t that big and once you’re done with exploring just check on Google Maps where you are.

5. Treat Yourself to a Delicious Donut

Such amazing vegan doughnuts, this one was blueberry and panna cotta

In the middle of Cascais old town there’s a delicious vegan donut and ice cream shop called Scoop ‘n Dough. It’s their second location, you can get the same delicious vegan treats in Lisbon.

Make sure to come here early. The earlier you come the bigger selection of delicious donuts you’ll get.

The shop is closed during winter, so make sure to check their homepage in case you visit during the colder months to see if it’s open.

6. Visit the Citadel of Cascais

I really enjoyed the modern art exhibit in the courtyard

The Citadel of Cascais, also known as the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz, is a historic fortress that was built in the 16th century to defend the town from pirates and invaders.

Today, it serves as a cultural center and museum, showcasing the history of Cascais through various exhibitions and events.

I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t go inside to check out the museum. But it seems like a great museum if you’re interested in history.

Don’t miss the modern art exhibits in the courtyard of the Citadel which is free to access.

7. See the Santa Marta Lighthouse

Another historic landmark in Cascais is the Santa Marta Lighthouse. Built in the 19th century, it is still in operation today and guides ships safely into the harbor.

The lighthouse also houses a small museum where you can learn about its history as well as other lighthouses in Portugal.

And of course, don’t forget to take some stunning photos of this picturesque lighthouse against the backdrop of the sparkling ocean.

8. Explore Santa Marta Beach

Located near the lighthouse is the Santa Marta Beach, one of the most unique beaches in Cascais. The beach is right next to Palácio dos Condes de Castro Guimarães, another attraction in Cascais.

One of the unique characteristics of this beach is its narrow inlet connecting it to the ocean. The water flows beneath a bridge, meeting the sandy shoreline of the beach.

9. Visit the Tortoises at Parque Marechal Carmona

Parque Marechal Carmona is a beautiful park in Cascais that’s perfect for a peaceful stroll or a picnic.

But the highlight of this park is the small lake where you can spot tortoises basking in the sun. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy nature, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

10. Go to the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego Museum

Art lovers shouldn’t miss the chance to visit Casa das Histórias Paula Rego Museum. This museum is dedicated to showcasing the works of Portuguese artist Paula Rego, known for her bold and provocative paintings.

The museum building itself is a work of art, with its colorful and angular design standing out in contrast to the traditional architecture of Cascais.

11. Take a Trip to Cabo da Roca

If you have time, take a trip to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Cascais and offers stunning views of the rugged coastline.

You can easily combine a trip to Cabo da Roca with a trip to Sintra, where you can admire the colorful Pena Palace and walk the walls of the Moorish Castle. In fact, many Sintra tours offer a combined trip to these two popular destinations.
