Is Benidorm Worth Visiting? Only If You Have Kids or Want to Party

Last year, 2.7 million people visited Benidorm, making it one of Spain’s most popular destinations. I hadn’t heard of Benidorm until my boyfriend, who is from the UK, mentioned it’s where all the British go to party.

Because of that, I had no desire to visit, but after spending 6 weeks on the Costa Blanca, I decided to take a day trip to see what the fuss was about.

My verdict? While the beautiful beaches in hidden bays were a pleasant surprise, I don’t think Benidorm is worth visiting. That said, I can see its appeal for families with kids and British party-goers. If you belong to either group, you might just love it.

Reasons Why Benidorm Is Not Worth Visiting

Before I go into the reasons why I think Benidorm is not worth visiting, I’d like to point out that while these reasons don’t appeal to me, they may be exactly why others love the city.

Too Touristy

I’ve visited many places in Spain, but none felt as touristy as Benidorm. Everywhere you turn, there are mini markets selling towels and suntan lotion, countless hotels, and souvenir shops.

It seems easier to find an American diner or a place serving a Full English Breakfast than a Spanish tapas bar. In case you are looking for a tapas bar, Calle Santo Domingo is a good place to start.

In 2023, there were 2.7 million international tourists in Benidorm, which is a lot for a city its size, resulting in crowded streets and overcrowded beaches.

Overcrowded Beaches

Benidorm’s two main beaches, Levante Beach and Poniente Beach, are located right in the city. While they are beautiful with golden sand and clear water, you’ll have to compete for a spot on the beach as they can get very crowded in the summer months.

But in case you do decide to visit the city, there are a few quieter beaches in Benidorm as well like Cala Tio Ximo.

Lack of Cultural Experiences

Benidorm is not the place to go if you’re looking for a cultural experience in Spain. The majority of visitors here are British tourists, which means English is widely spoken and many of the establishments cater to British tastes.

If you want to immerse yourself in Spanish culture, this may not be the best place for you.

Drunk People

I admit, I only visited Benidorm on a day trip from Torrevieja, so I didn’t see any drunk people. However, from what I’ve heard from my boyfriend, who attended a bachelor party there, it gets crazy at night.

Drunk tourists stumbling around and rowdy behavior is not uncommon in Benidorm, especially during peak season.

Okay Old Town

Exploring the old town in Benidorm is still a worthwhile activity, but it can’t compete with other nearby towns. For example, the old town of Altea is one of the most picturesque in Spain—it’s truly beautiful. In contrast, Benidorm’s old town is just average, nothing to write home about.

Reasons Why Benidorm Is Worth Visiting

As I mentioned earlier, I understand that many of the attractions in Benidorm are appealing for families or those looking to party. Since I’m neither, I don’t have personal experiences with the following.

Theme Parks for Kids

Benidorm is home to several theme parks and water parks, including Terra Mitica and Aqualandia. These are perfect for families with young kids looking for a fun day out.

Easily Accessible and Safe Beaches

Every single beach I visited in Benidorm, even the more remote ones, had a lifeguard on duty and was accessible on foot from the city center, making them ideal for families with kids.

Available Water Sports

The two main beaches offer a variety of water activities, including jet skiing, snorkeling boat rides, parasailing, and cable skiing, which uses a lift instead of a boat for water skiing.

Night Life for Party-People

Benidorm’s nightlife is legendary, and you’ll find plenty of bars and clubs open until the early hours. If partying, drinking, and dancing all night is your idea of a good time, then Benidorm won’t disappoint.

Final Thoughts: Is Benidorm Worth Visiting?

If you’re a family with young kids looking for a fun-filled vacation or someone who loves to party all night, then Benidorm is definitely worth considering.

However, if you’re looking for an authentic Spanish experience and cultural immersion, there are better places on the Costa Blanca to visit.

Ultimately, it all comes down to your personal preferences and travel style. So, is Benidorm worth visiting? It depends on what you’re looking for!
