Looking for the perfect beach near Porto? After a month in the city, I learned that while Porto itself doesn’t have beaches, a quick tram or train ride will take you to the coast. From cool surf spots to quiet sandy beaches, it’s all just a short trip away.

One thing to keep in mind? The Atlantic Ocean here is beautiful, but freezing. Even in the peak of summer, the water is shockingly cold, so be prepared for a refreshing (or freezing) dip!

1. Most Popular Beach: Praia do Carneiro

Praia do Carneiro is the nearest beach to Porto and also the most visited one, thanks to its easy access via public transport. It’s the first of many beaches along the coast.

The historic tram is a great way to get there, it’s often recommended as a must-do in Porto. Keep in mind that your regular public transport card won’t work on this tram, so you’ll need to buy a ticket directly from the driver.

For the best experience, take the tram to the beach, walk north along the coast until you reach the Pérgola da Foz. It’s a scenic beachfront walk and you can stop at multiple beaches along the way for a dip. When you’re ready, catch a bus back to the city.

How to Get There

  • By Tram: Take the historic tram Line 1 from Porto’s center to Foz do Douro. Tickets must be purchased from the driver.
  • By Bus: Several buses run from Porto to Foz do Douro, including Bus 500, which follows a scenic route along the river.
  • By Foot/Bike: If you enjoy walking or cycling, follow the Douro River west from Ribeira, it’s a beautiful 6 km (3.7-mile) route to the beach.

2. Most Quiet Beach: Praia Cabedelo do Douro

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Praia Cabedelo do Douro is the perfect option for you. This massive beach in Vila Nova de Gaia feels almost empty, even when there are people around. It’s the ideal spot to relax and enjoy the ocean view without the crowds.

However, the downside is that there are no public toilets, shops, or restaurants nearby. So, make sure to bring enough water and vegan snacks from Porto. The lack of facilities means visitors resort to using the surrounding fields, which is a bit disgusting.

Another thing to keep in mind is the unpredictable weather. On one visit, I left Porto under clear blue skies, only to arrive at Praia Cabedelo do Douro in thick fog, unable to even see the ocean. I texted my boyfriend, and he said it was still sunny back in Porto!

How to Get There

  • By Car / Uber: The by far fastest and most convenient way to get there is by car or Uber, it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • By Bus: The journey takes over an hour. Take bus 901 or 906 from Porto to Zeferino Costa in Vila Nova de Gaia. From there, transfer to bus 902 and get off at Areias Cabedelo, then walk 10 minutes north to the beach. Other routes require walking between connections.

3. Best Beach for Surfing: Praia de Matosinhos

If you’re looking to surf near Porto, Praia de Matosinhos is the best spot. The beach has consistent waves, a sandy bottom, and plenty of surf schools, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers.

Rental shops line the shore, so you can easily grab a board and wetsuit if you don’t have your own. And Matosinhos is super easy access from Porto.

How to Get There

  • By Metro: Take the Metro Line A (Blue Line) from Porto to Matosinhos Sul. From there, it’s a short 5-minute walk to the beach.
  • By Bus: Several buses, including Bus 500, run between Porto and Matosinhos.

4. Most Instagrammable Beach: Praia de Miramar

Praia de Miramar is one of the most picturesque beaches, thanks to its iconic Capela do Senhor da Pedra, a pretty chapel right on the beach. The moment you arrive at the beach, you’ll spot it in the distance. It’s a must-visit for photos in the North of Portugal.

After exploring the chapel, head south along the beach for a quieter, more relaxing spot. There are a few small cafés nearby where you can grab a drink or ice cream, and they also have public toilets.

How to Get There

  • By Train: Take the urban train from São Bento or Campanhã station towards Aveiro and get off at Miramar. The journey takes about 20 minutes, and from the station, it’s a short walk to the beach.
  • By Car: Driving takes around 20 minutes from Porto, with parking available near the beach.
