Wildling Tanuki Review: My Favourite Minimalist Summer Shoes
If you travel light, you know every item in your bag has to earn its place. For years, Iโve worn barefoot shoes, but during summer most of them still felt a little too bulky or too warm.
I wanted something breathable, truly lightweight, and packable enough that bringing it along wouldnโt feel like a tradeoff. Thatโs when I found the Wildling Tanuki, barefoot shoes made from paper (yes, really).
Iโve now worn them nearly every day through a full summer. In this post, Iโll break down how they compare to other barefoot shoes Iโve tried (like Feelgrounds and Xero), when they shine, where they fall short, and who I think theyโre perfect for.
Whether you’re a minimalist traveler or just tired of “barefoot” shoes that don’t feel that barefoot, this review will help you figure out if the Wildling Tanuki is worth it for you.
Why I Switched to the Wildling Tanuki for Summer Travel
Iโve worn barefoot shoes for years, Feelgrounds, Xero, Vivobarefoot, you name it, but in summer, even my most breathable pairs started to feel too warm.
So, I started looking for a lighter and cooler pair for hot weather. Bonus points if they packed down small, since I travel as a minimalist and need shoes that fit that lifestyle.
Thatโs when I found the Wildling Tanuki, a barefoot shoe made from Japanese washi paper.
After wearing them nearly every day for a summer, theyโve earned their spot on my list of favorite minimalist shoes. Theyโre light, breathable, and take up barely any space in my bag, everything I want in a summer shoe.

What Makes the Wildling Tanuki Perfect for Minimalist Packing
One of the first things I noticed about the Tanuki shoes was how compact they are. Theyโre thin, flexible, and fold down small.
That means I never have to choose which shoes to wear and which to pack. If Iโm traveling with just a small backpack, these easily fit without taking up precious space.
Theyโre also incredibly lightweight. Theyโre easily the lightest closed shoes Iโve ever owned. That matters when youโre weighing every item in your bag.
Breathability vs. Weather: When These Shine (and When They Donโt)
The standout feature of the Tanuki is how breathable they are. On hot summer days, my feet stay noticeably cooler compared to any other shoes Iโve worn. The upper material is made from a paper fabric that allows air to circulate, no sweaty feet, even after hours of walking.
But that breathability comes with a tradeoff: theyโre not water-resistant at all. I got caught in a summer downpour once, and my feet were soaked within seconds. So, if youโre expecting wet weather or walking through dewy grass, youโll want a backup pair.
They are ideal for dry summer days, city exploring, or as comfy shoes to slip into after more rugged activities, not for hiking through mud or dealing with unpredictable climates.
The Tanuki is fantastic for hot, dry weather, but it’s not the Wildling model I reach for in spring. If you need something that handles cooler temperatures and occasional rain better, check out my full Wildling Shoes Review where I compare all the models I’ve tested.
Comfort and Fit: Super Flexible Barefoot Feel
The material is super thin and flexible, thereโs no break-in period. While the toe box isnโt the widest Iโve worn, it still feels spacious enough, and because the fabric is so thin and forgiving, it never feels tight or restrictive.
The sole is extremely thin, even compared to other barefoot shoes. You feel the ground beneath you in a way thatโs rare outside of actual barefoot walking. Personally, I wouldnโt run in them, they donโt offer enough structure for that, but for everyday wear, theyโre perfect.
Iโve worn them all day while exploring new cities and on some forest walks and never felt discomfort. They mold nicely to your feet, and because theyโre so lightweight, you barely notice youโre wearing shoes at all.

How Durable Are They?
When I first got the Tanuki, I wasnโt sure how well shoes made from washi paper would hold up. They felt almost too light to last, but after wearing them nearly every day through one summer, Iโve been pleasantly surprised.
So far, mine are still in great shape. No major wear, no loose threads, and the soles havenโt worn down noticeably despite plenty of city walking.
That said, Iโve read other reviews mentioning the seam at the toe area can come loose over time. It hasnโt happened to me, but Iโve only used them during warmer months, I wouldnโt wear them in fall or winter, as theyโre definitely too thin for cooler weather.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy the Wildling Tanuki Shoes?
If youโre a minimalist traveler or someone who wants a truly barefoot, breathable shoe for summer, the Wildling Tanuki is absolutely worth considering. Theyโre light, flexible, and packable, all without sacrificing comfort or style.
I wouldnโt wear them in the rain or for running, and I donโt expect them to last forever. But for dry-weather travel, city exploring, or just keeping your packing list as light as possible, theyโre one of the best barefoot shoes Iโve found.
Iโll definitely keep using them every summer, and Iโd happily buy another pair when these wear out.
Planning ahead for colder weather? I also tested two of Wildlingโs vegan-friendly autumn and winter shoes.
