Extreme Minimalist Packing for Weekend Trip: Just a Day Bag

For my last weekend trip, I went all in on minimalist packing, I fit everything into just a bum bag. It technically worked, but I quickly realized it wasn’t ideal. Carrying it over one shoulder felt uncomfortable, especially since I’m not used to sling bags.

Looking back, I wish I had brought my small day trip bag instead. It’s just as compact but way more comfortable to carry for a full weekend away.

This was an early summer trip with warm weather and a bit of rain. I wore a top, a skirt, and sneakers while traveling, and everything else fit into that tiny bag. Here’s my minimalist weekend packing list, plus my best tips for packing light without missing the essentials.

My Minimalist Weekend Packing List

I was wearing a top, a skirt, and sneakers while traveling. This list includes everything I packed and wish I had packed, so I already fixed the things I would’ve done differently.

  • 2 pairs of underwear and socks: one fresh set per day
  • 1 pajama top: worn with underwear to save space
  • 1 spare T-shirt: enough for a clean change (I didn’t bring it but it might have been a niche addition)
  • 1 thin cardigan: perfect for cooler evenings
  • 1 pair of leggings: cozy for layering or lounging
  • 1 rain jacket: optional, only when the weather forecast predicts rain
  • 1 small water bottle: even in a tiny bag, hydration matters
  • Toothbrush + toothpaste: always essential, and even on such a short stay I bring my electric toothbrush
  • Shampoo + soap bar (2-in-1): compact and zero-waste
  • Lip balm
  • Face lotion: I didn’t bring it, but I wish I had
  • Sun lotion: early summer sun can be sneaky
  • Hairbrush: travel-sized and lightweight
  • Phone charger: can’t go without it
  • Power bank: backup power for longer days out
  • Headphones: for travel entertainment and podcasts (it’s way smaller than an ebook reader)

And yes, it’s absolutely okay to wear the same skirt for 3 days, and a top can easily last for 2 (or even 3 days, lets be honest). That mindset alone saves so much space.

Choosing the Right Minimalist Weekend Bag

For this trip, I packed everything into a bum bag, yes, really. It was minimalist to the extreme, and while it technically worked, it wasn’t the most comfortable option. Carrying it over one shoulder for an entire weekend made me realize I’m just not a one-strap person.

If I were to do it again (and I definitely will), I’d bring my small drawstring backpack instead. It’s still super small, but much easier to wear all day. It fits a bit more than the bum bag, with better weight distribution and more flexibility.

So yes, you can pack for a weekend in something as small as a bum bag, but I recommend choosing a small day pack or drawstring backpack to make it more comfortable.

Tips for Packing Light for a Weekend

Here are my go-to tips for keeping it truly minimalist:

  • Rewear your outfit: You really don’t need a fresh outfit for each day. Wearing the same skirt for three days? Totally fine. The same goes for a top, but it’s also fine to pack one spare, if you want.
  • Pack dual-purpose layers: Leggings are one of the most versatile things you can bring. I used them as a layer under my skirt on colder days and again for a quick morning yoga session with my friend. They can also double as lounge or sleepwear.
  • Stick to basic toiletries: I brought just the essentials, solid shampoo/soap combo, toothpaste, toothbrush, and lotion. You can absolutely skip your full beauty routine for a 3-day trip.
  • Plan for the weather, but don’t overdo it: A rain jacket was a must for this trip, but if the forecast had looked clear, I’d have skipped it entirely. Always check the weather right before you pack so you don’t bring unnecessary extras.
  • Choose the right bag: I learned the hard way that a bum bag wasn’t the most comfortable choice. But for most people, the challenge is the opposite, don’t go too big. A larger bag will tempt you to overpack. A small day bag, like a drawstring backpack, is perfect.
  • Be honest with yourself: If you’re not doing 3-step skincare routines or changing outfits twice a day at home, you won’t do it on a weekend trip either. Pack for how you actually live and travel.

Final Thoughts: Extreme Minimalist Packing

Packing for a weekend trip doesn’t have to mean stuffing a full backpack or stressing over what to leave behind. With just a few essentials and the right mindset, you can travel with one small day bag and still have everything you need.

Whether you’re headed out for two nights or three, focus on what you’ll actually wear and use, nothing more. It’s freeing, flexible, and honestly makes travel a lot more enjoyable.
