Convent of Christ: Visiting Tomar’s Most Impressive Site

If there’s one place you shouldn’t miss in Tomar, it’s the Convent of Christ.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a large complex filled with cloisters, detailed stonework, and one of the most unique churches I’ve ever seen.

I visited as part of a day trip and didn’t expect it to be this impressive. One moment you’re walking through quiet courtyards, the next you’re inside a round church covered in paintings from floor to ceiling.

It’s not the easiest place to navigate though. Some areas were under construction when I visited, and the signage wasn’t always clear.

In this guide, I’ll show you what to see at the Convent of Christ and how to make the most of your visit.

What to See at the Convent of Christ

The Convent of Christ is quite large, and there’s a lot to explore. If you’re short on time, here are the highlights you shouldn’t miss.

  • The most impressive part is the Charola, the round church at the heart of the complex. It’s unlike any church I’ve seen before, with the altar in the center and a circular walkway around it. The walls are covered in paintings from top to bottom.
  • Another standout is the chapterhouse window, a famous example of Manueline architecture. You can see it from different angles as you move through the complex, and the level of detail is really impressive.
  • The cloisters are also worth spending time in. The one that stood out most to me had trees in the middle and blue tiles along the walls. It felt especially peaceful and more intricate compared to some of the others.
  • There’s also a cistern. It’s a bit eerie when you walk down there, especially with the dim lighting, but also really interesting. You can even see moss growing near the lamps, which shows how much moisture is still in the walls.
  • Beyond the main highlights, you’ll also pass through more practical areas like the kitchens, dining rooms, living quarters, and even a heating system, which gives you a better sense of how this place functioned in the past.

My Experience Visiting the Convent of Christ

When I visited the convent quite a few areas were under reconstruction, so unfortunately I couldn’t see all of it. We spent about an hour there, but you’ll easily need more time when everything is open.

When I visited in April, it didn’t feel crowded at all. There were a few school groups, but we just changed the order of rooms to avoid them, which worked well.

The layout was a bit confusing though. The signage wasn’t very clear, so we mostly followed “exit” signs, which did lead us through different areas, but I wasn’t always sure if we saw everything.

Tips for Visiting the Convent of Christ

  • Bring or photograph a map
    The layout can be confusing, and the signage isn’t always clear. Having a map helps make sure you don’t miss anything.
  • Allow enough time
    I spent about an hour there, but if everything is open, you’ll likely need 2 hours or more to see it properly.
  • Check opening times
    Hours vary by season.
    • June – September: 9:00 am – 6:30 pm
    • October – May: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
  • Entrance fee
    Tickets cost €15. You can usually buy them at the entrance, but it’s also possible to purchase them online.
  • Expect possible construction
    Some areas may be closed or under renovation, which can affect your route through the complex.
  • Visit early or adjust your route
    It wasn’t very crowded overall, but there were a few school groups. We simply changed the order of rooms to avoid them.
  • Wear comfortable shoes
    You’ll be walking quite a bit on stone floors and through different levels of the complex.

Do You Need a Guide for the Convent of Christ?

You don’t need a guide to visit the Convent of Christ, but it can definitely enhance the experience.

I visited as part of a guided tour, and having someone explain the history and point out details made a big difference. Without that context, it would have been easy to walk past some of the most interesting features without realizing their significance.

That said, it’s also possible to visit on your own.

Is the Convent of Christ Worth Visiting?

Yes, the Convent of Christ is absolutely worth visiting.

It’s one of the most unique historical sites in Portugal, especially because of its connection to the Knights Templar and the mix of architectural styles.

I also liked that it wasn’t overcrowded. Compared to places like Sintra, it felt much more relaxed, which made the experience more enjoyable.

It’s a great place to visit if you:

  • Enjoy history and architecture
  • Like exploring larger complexes with different areas
  • Prefer places that aren’t overly crowded

Don’t Miss Out on Exploring the Town of Tomar

The convent is the main highlight, but the town itself has a lot of charm, from cobblestone streets and small squares to a few more interesting sights worth seeing.

Since the complex can take a couple of hours to explore, it fits perfectly into a half-day plan, leaving you time to wander around Tomar.
