15 Famous Landmarks in Malaysia You Shouldn’t Miss

Are you looking for the most famous landmarks in Malaysia? I’ve got you covered!

Malaysia is a country with rich history and culture. The country’s famous landmarks attract tourists from all over the world.

During my time in Malaysia, I only had time to explore the amazing landmarks within the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

I can’t wait to go to Malaysia again to discover more famous landmarks. But for now, I reached out to other travellers who have explored Malaysia and asked them to share their experiences. Together we have created a comprehensive list of landmarks in Malaysia.

Famous Landmarks in Kuala Lumpur

Quite a few of the most major landmarks in Malaysia are located in the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. So they aren’t just landmarks of Kuala Lumpur but landmarks of the entire country.

1. Batu Caves

Visiting Batu Caves; From Kuala Lumpur to Batu Caves
Batu Caves, the most famous landmark in Malaysia

The Batu Caves are a famous landmark just outside Kuala Lumpur. It’s a must-visit for its colorful steps and the towering golden statue of the Hindu god Murugan. This limestone cave complex houses Hindu temples and shrines, offering both cultural and natural wonders.

The awe-inspiring sight of the staircase, statue, and temple at the base is just the beginning. The main cave, free to enter, features a massive interior with high ceilings and smaller shrines.

For a deeper experience, explore the Dark Cave with a guided tour to discover unique wildlife and rock formations.

Don’t forget to dress modestly, but sarongs are available to borrow in case you wear something too short.

The Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpurโ€™s most iconic landmark, are a stunning pair of skyscrapers that once held the title of the tallest building in the world. They remain the tallest twin towers worldwide.

Their striking design and breathtaking city views from the top make them a must-visit. Surrounding the towers is a serene park, perfect for relaxing and soaking in the skyline.

Standing beneath these architectural marvels is one of the best free experiences Kuala Lumpur has to offer, donโ€™t miss it!

3. Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple, my favorite in Kuala Lumpur, is a breathtaking six-tiered temple perched on a hill outside the city center. Dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu, it blends Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian elements, showcasing Chinese culture in Southeast Asia.

While thereโ€™s no direct public transport, you can reach the temple by walking from Maharajalela Station, taking a taxi, or joining a tour. Be aware, the walk is uphill and lengthy (I’m speaking from experience), taxis are the easier option.

Don’t miss out on exploring the temple’s beautiful garden, where you can learn about the Chinese zodiac and enjoy a peaceful stroll.

For another impressive temple, visit the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpurโ€™s oldest Hindu temple.

Famous for its Moorish architecture and white domes, Masjid Jamek is a serene escape from the cityโ€™s bustle. Visitors must dress modestly, and robes are provided for free if needed.

KL Tower, or Menara Kuala Lumpur, is a striking 421-meter telecommunications tower and one of Malaysiaโ€™s most iconic landmarks. It is the tallest tower in Southeast Asia and the seventh tallest of its kind worldwide.

Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the tower offers breathtaking 360-degree views from its observation deck, along with dining and entertainment options. For the best perspective, admire KL Tower from a distance, I enjoyed a spectacular view from my hotelโ€™s infinity pool.

The Cameron Highlands, located 200 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur in Tanah Rata, sit at 1,500 meters above sea level, offering a cool and refreshing climate year-round. Accessible by public bus or guided tour, the region is renowned for its lush green tea plantations.

Enjoy a cup of locally grown tea at charming tea shops while soaking in the breathtaking scenery. Beyond tea, the highlands offer diverse attractions: explore mystical mossy forests, discover hidden waterfalls, and admire colonial mansions that echo the areaโ€™s historic charm.

Visit butterfly farms to marvel at these delicate creatures, pick fresh strawberries at the famous fields, or relax with a round of golf at a course surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. The Cameron Highlands promise a blend of tranquility, adventure, and timeless beauty.

With just three resorts, Lang Tengah is a peaceful escape for nature lovers, free from luxury hotels and nightlife. Its beaches offer snorkeling right from the shore, with the islandโ€™s location in Terengganu Marine Park attracting vibrant fish and baby sharks.

Visitors can join organized snorkeling or diving tours or explore the jungle trails leading to remote, picturesque spots. If lucky, you might witness the magical blue tears, a breathtaking natural phenomenon that lights up the water at night.

If you love hiking, Mount Kinabalu should be on your bucket list! Standing at 4,095 meters (13,435 feet), itโ€™s Malaysiaโ€™s highest peak and a true test of endurance.

Reaching the summit requires preparation, but the sense of achievement and the breathtaking sunrise views make it all worthwhile. Climbing permits are limited, so book a package with a local operator 3โ€“6 months in advance.

Located two hours from Kota Kinabalu, most tours include hotel pick-up and a two-day itinerary. Day one involves a six-hour hike to Panalaban Base Camp (3,272 meters), where youโ€™ll dine and rest overnight. Day two begins at 2 a.m. with a 3โ€“5 hour climb to Lowโ€™s Peak, followed by a 4โ€“6 hour descent.

The Birch Memorial Clock Tower in the charming city of Ipoh may not be one of the most famous Malaysian landmarks, but it holds deep significance for the Perak state. Built in 1909 during British rule, it commemorates James W. W. Birch, the stateโ€™s first British resident.

The whitewashed tower, with friezes, five bells, and a working clock, symbolizes colonial ideals like justice and loyalty.

But its history is complex, Birchโ€™s assassination by resistance fighters started the Perak War and remains a local symbol of sovereignty. Two nearby streets are even named after his assassins.

Set against Ipohโ€™s blue skies, the tower is particularly striking from the stone staircase leading to its hilltop location. Near the State Mosque and Ipoh Railway Station, itโ€™s a convenient stop for train travelers or those exploring downtown.

Have you heard of Penang and its capital, George Town? As one of Malaysiaโ€™s oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, itโ€™s a vibrant cultural gem and an iconic landmark.

Known as Malaysiaโ€™s gastronomic capital, George Town offers a fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures, evident in its temples, shophouses, and incredible street food. From Laksa to Cendol, the flavors are as diverse as the city itself.

The city is equally famous for its street art, which began in 2012 with murals by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic. Today, itโ€™s a global collaboration, with new pieces appearing regularly. Here you can find an extensive lists of street art pieces.

Beyond food and art, Penang offers attractions like Kek Lok Si, Malaysiaโ€™s largest Buddhist temple, panoramic views from Penang Hill, trekking in Penang National Park, and stunning sunsets over the Straits of Malacca.

Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Andaman Sea and surrounding islands while marveling at the tropical beauty below. Accessing the bridge involves a cable car ride from the Oriental Village, an adventure in itself with spectacular views of the island.

Plan to spend at least half a day here to fully appreciate the bridge, capture memorable photos, and explore nearby attractions like the 3D art museum, shops, and restaurants at the Oriental Village.

Penang Hill, rising 880 meters, is a must-visit for its stunning views of George Town, Penang Island, and even Thailand on clear days. But thereโ€™s more to explore than just the scenery.

The Habitat, a rainforest discovery center, offers immersive trails and a 360-degree observation deck. Visitors can also enjoy hiking, museums, temples, and unique attractions like a typhoon simulator.

Getting to Penang Hill is half the fun. There is a funicular train to take you to the top which can be quite thrilling as itโ€™s very steep. In fact, it has the steepest tunnel track in the world. This is one of the most popular things to do in Penang so try to visit on a weekday to avoid long lines.
