I’ve tested quite a few backpacks over the years, and while I’ve yet to find the perfect one, the Patagonia Black Hole 25L comes pretty close for the right type of traveler. It’s lightweight, sturdy, and built to last, but it’s not without its drawbacks.
I originally picked up this backpack as an upgrade from my old school bag, thinking it’d be great for weekend trips. Instead, I’ve been using it for minimalist long-term travel, putting it through all kinds of real-world tests.
So, is it the right backpack for you? In this honest review, I’ll break down what I love about it, where it falls short, and whether it’s worth your money.

Material & Design
Made from 100% recycled polyester with a TPU-film laminate, the Black Hole 25L is both durable and highly water-resistant, ideal for any adventure. The old model was even more durable and completely water-proof but they changed it to make it more lightweight.
Patagonia also ensures ethical production, crafting it in a Fair Trade Certified factory in Vietnam.
The design is sleek and simple, featuring Patagonia branding on the front. It’s available in different colors, including classic black if you prefer a more subtle look.

Different Compartments
The Black Hole 25L keeps it simple yet functional with:
- A spacious main compartment with an internal zippered pocket for small travel essentials like keys or a passport.
- A padded laptop sleeve against the back for extra protection.
- Two external zippered pockets for quick-access items like sunglasses or snacks, one in the front and one on top. The one on top has a key clip to keep your keys secure.
- Dual water bottle pockets on the sides, one of my favorite features since my last backpack lacked them, and I always carry a reusable bottle.
Size and Comfort
The Black Hole backpack comes in 25L and 32L. I chose the 25L to avoid overpacking, and despite being designed for day trips and weekend getaways, I’ve comfortably used it for two months of minimalist travel in winter in Spain and the UK.
For comfort, it features adjustable shoulder straps, a padded back panel, and a sternum strap for extra support. I especially appreciate that the sternum strap is height-adjustable, making it easier to customize the fit for long wear.

- Adding items to the top and front pockets of a fully packed backpack can be challenging because the full main compartment limits the available space in those pockets.
- Some other reviews mention the new model’s material is less durable, but my experience with the new model has been positive, with it appearing both durable and well-made.
My Experience Using the Patagonia Backpack
I bought my Patagonia Black Hole 25L in a small shop in Barcelona after my old bag unexpectedly gave out. Since then, it’s been my go-to bag for multiple trips, including a two-month trip through Spain and the UK.
One major perk? It qualifies as a personal item on flights, saving me from extra baggage fees, one of the perks of being a minimalist traveler.
After months of use, I can confidently say this backpack is sturdy and reliable. Its narrow, sleek design makes it comfortable to carry for long periods, but that same narrow shape limits its internal space, it feels smaller than other bags with 25L capacity.
But ultimately, I still love the bag and it just challenges me to pack even more minimalistic for long trips. For a short trip I’d have no problem at all fitting everything I need inside.
Who Is This Backpack Best For?
I recommend the Patagonia Black Hole 25L for short trips, ultra-minimalist travelers, or as an everyday backpack. Its sleek, sturdy design makes it comfortable to carry for long periods, and it works well as a personal item on flights.
That said, I don’t recommend it for hiking, as it lacks a hip belt for added support when carrying heavier loads.
If you’re looking for a rugged, water-resistant pack for travel or daily use, this is a solid choice, but for outdoor adventures, you may want something with more structure and support.
