Is Malaga Worth Visiting? 7 Reasons Why It Is
Mรกlaga is the second largest city in Andalusia after Seville and the most accessible city in this beautiful region. Many people use it mainly as a starting point to explore nearby cities, but is Mรกlaga worth visiting on its own?
Honestly, it took me two visits to truly appreciate the city. During my first trip, I had just come from Granada and was so impressed by it that Mรกlaga couldn’t compete. I’m glad I returned, though, because on my second visit, I fell in love with this coastal city.
Now, I can confidently write why you should visit this beautiful city as well.

Reasons Why You Should Visit Mรกlaga
1. Rich History and Culture
Mรกlaga has a long and fascinating history, with influences from Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, and Christians. You can see this reflected in its diverse architecture, including the Alcazaba fortress, Gibralfaro Castle, and the Cathedral of Mรกlaga.
While the Alcazaba of Mรกlaga may not be as impressive as the Alcazaba in Granada, itโs still worth a visit. It’s incredible that the Alcazaba and the Roman Theater are right in Mรกlaga old town.
Gibralfaro Castle, perched on a nearby hill, offers stunning panoramic views, and I enjoyed walking along the castle walls.
The Cathedral of Mรกlaga, also known as La Manquita due to its unfinished right tower, is a must-see for its impressive interior and intricate designs.
2. Stunning Beaches
Located on the famous Costa del Sol (Coast of Sun), Mรกlaga is blessed with beautiful beaches.
Malagueta Beach is the nearest beach to the city center, making it perfect for a quick swim in the Mediterranean Sea. However, its easy accessibility can lead to crowds during the summer months.
If youโre looking for less crowded beaches, head east or west along the coast. During my last visit to Mรกlaga I spent some time at Playa de Huelin, which can still be accessed on foot from the center, and I was surprised by how quiet the beach was.
Other stunning beaches on the Costa del Sol are also just a short drive away. And who knows, you might fall in love with it’s picturesque beaches. After all, it’s not one of the most beautiful wedding locations in Europe.
3. Modern Art Scene
Mรกlaga is not just about history and beaches, it has a vibrant modern art scene as well. The most famous artist from Mรกlaga is, of course, Pablo Picasso. You can visit his birthplace and the Picasso Museum which features many of his works.
Besides the Picasso Museum, there are other museums and galleries featuring contemporary art from local and international artists. One example is Centre Pompidou Mรกlaga, a branch of the renowned museum in Paris. Even the exterior of this modern art museum is worth a visit.
Don’t forget to keep your eyes open when you wander through Mรกlaga to discover the amazing street art you can find throughout the city.
To visit more of the city’s many museums you need to spend 2 days in Mรกlaga at the very least, the more time you have the better.
4. Big City Atmosphere with a Laid-Back Vibe
Mรกlaga has all the amenities and attractions of a big city, but it still maintains a relaxed and laid-back vibe.
You can spend your days exploring museums and galleries, lounging on the beach, or shopping in the bustling city center. And when you need a break, there are plenty of cafes and outdoor terraces to grab a drink and people-watch.
5. Stunning Viewpoints
My favourite viewpoint in Mรกlaga is Mirador de la Coracha. It’s located on the walkway between Alcazaba fortress and Gibralfaro Castle. You get amazing views of the coast and the harbour.
From the Alcazaba itself you can get some great views of the city of Mรกlaga.
6. Delicious Vegan Food
A big bonus for me was the delicious vegan food scene in Mรกlaga. There are several all-vegan restaurants. My favorite is Meet Vegano. I highly recommend booking a table for dinner, as seating is limited.
There’s also an amazing all-vegan doughnut and coffee shop called Bun and Coffee. Specialty Coffee & Fresh Doughnuts right next to the cathedral.
7. Day Trip Options
Mรกlaga is a great base for day trips to explore other cities in Andalusia, thanks to its excellent public transportation services. Just make sure to explore Mรกlaga itself first before you head out on day trips.
Here are some of the best day trips from Mรกlaga:
- Ronda โ a stunning mountain town split by a canyon into two parts, which are connected by an impressive bridge.
- Caminito del Rey โ a thrilling hike along a narrow path attached to the side of a cliff.
- Nerja โ a charming coastal town known for its beautiful beaches and stunning views.
- Marbella โ a luxurious seaside town famous for its marina and high-end boutiques.
- Granada โ home to the famous Alhambra palace and other historical sites. It’s possible to do a day trip but I recommend spending a few nights, there are just so many things to do in Granada.
